No account number on NatWest card!

  • Exactly. Even *if* a direct debit was set up using the sort code and account number the consumer is protected by the DD guarantee.

It's just another irritating aspect of banking with RBS group. NatWests banking app is much better than RBS version despite the same app design, versions aren't released simultaneously.

At one time RBS/NatWest also used to have a 'card narrative' displayed (i.e. Step Account, Current Plus); don't recall any of my cards held with them (Solo, Visa Debit) having the account code/sort code shown though.

I can even remember when one of my (ex)partners had their photo on the back of their RBS Visa Debit card... makes me feel old, haha!

I had one of those, it was in the mid '80s.

I'd say so. What kind of fraud is avoided by withholding the account number? If somebody knows your acc/no and sort code, they can do precisely one thing: deposit money in your account. Somebody could do a lot more damage by using the 16-digit number and 3-digit security code, and these *are* displayed on Natwest cards. I just don't understand the logic.
The account number isn't on the card because it is not required.

The only info you need on the card is that required to use the card. Your acc no. & sort code aren't required.

Why clutter it up with useless information. There are enough people who struggle to identify their CV2 code without putting lots of other numbers on it to confuse them even more

My credit cards don't have the account number on them and before anybody says, the account number is not necessarily the big number across the centre (my Virgin card is an example)

Write it on a bit of paper & put it in your purse/wallet. Technological equivalents are available.

The sortcode and account number are probably still encoded on the mag stripe, so if you can't be bothered to write them on a piece of paper you could invest in one of these.

    Why not memorise it?
That's something your brain is used for.

    Or write it down somewhere.

If it bothers you that much switch to a bank that puts it on a card............(now eagerly awaiting for the thread "Which banks have account numbers on their cards?" to be posted..........
  • Surprised at some of the attitude given in replies to the OP here.

I've also just switched to nat west and found it rather annoying that my account number is not shown. Sure there's bigger things in life to fret about but there doesn't appear to be any genuine reason why it is not shown. Every other bank card I've ever had has included the account number so leaving it off is not the norm by any means.

Thankfully, I only have one account with nat west... I feel for people that have more than one (and therefore more than one card) as it must Increase the chances of using the wrong card by accident!!

The sort code is on RBS cards, -at least it is on mine, I presume everybody else's is the same. It doesn't show the account number though.

You're right that the sort code and account no. are not "required" on debit cards, but it's very useful to have them there. If anybody needs their account details the debit card is the first place that most people will look.
  • Honestly, some replies on here are just FULL of attitude ! Just don't reply on a thread if you are going to whinge about WHY the OP has asked a question.

If an account number isn't needed on a card then neither is a sort code. You don't type in a sort code to buy something online so don't give an unsubstantiated answer about 'everything you need to use the card is there' because you don't need a sort code to use the card.
