What's your budget? If you want the very best gaming rig, a gaming PC beats a console.0

The difference between what I paid for my Xbox One & the price of a 1tb one was at the time £60, I know I can pick up a 2tb external drive for around that figure.
As for the first part, chances are if you know Tomb Raider you know it was the case it was timed exclusive - failing that a good retailer will tell you. (Which instantly rules out the vast majority of supermarkets, cheap does not always mean good!)
I think the difference between 500gb and 1tb is £30 now. Personally I would be too paranoid that I would stuff up my console installing a hd myself. With tomb raider unless you read gaming press a lot or watch a gaming tv show like video game nation on challenge you wont have a clue.0 -

Paranoid about plugging in a USB device? Not sure how you've made it this far.
Another tick for the Xbox1 is that they plug and play nicely with external hard drives. So as time goes on and your filling the 500gb one in the console, at the same time the price of external hard drives is also falling.
TBH I've got around 12 games on my 500gb drive but in reality you only play 3-5 at one time so unistalling and reinstalling again at a later date isn't an issue and all game saves are saved in the cloud so you don't lose track of where your upto.0 -

There are 300+ Game stores in the United Kingdom, I believe at last count not including supermarkets there were close to 2000 gaming outlets in the UK. Walk into any one of those and if you ask they'll tell you. Even if you're unwilling or unable to do that, one word - little hint, they don't pay much tax & is one of the most visited websites in the world. Maybe 15 years ago the situation you described would exist, but there's no reason for it to exist today beyond being completely technologically inept.
I get that dealing with computer components can be a daunting task, but I'll level with you, it's no more or less difficult than dealing with flat pack furniture or cooking a meal. Same principles apply, you ensure you've got the right tools for the job, ensure you handle it properly & follow the instructions. Changing a PS4 hard drive is a simple enough job, on Xbox One you don't even need to do that, it's plug & play.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -

you mean the ports on the front that don't exist?
If you mean you own a PS4,then there's online manuals for both consoles.0 -

While it appears to be fairly simple there is still plenty of chance to mess it up. Personally I wouldn't want to chance it just to save a relatively small amount of cash.0
