Ulterior motives from a salesman? surely not :rotfl:

I do hope it was nothing more sinister than being desperate for a sale before the month/year end cutoff arrived ;)

Desperation of a more personal kind, and nothing to do with cars! Nothing sinister, though. He made suggestions. I declined them. End of story. I think I did quite well out of it. I got a fantastic deal on the trade in, without having the faintest idea why until afterwards, so no need for me to feel guilty about reaping the benefit despite there never having been any possibility of my fulfilling his expectations. ;)
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

My mother got her new car yesterday (well, actually it's 3 years old, so new to her) and apparently the 'really friendly salesman' knocked off the £125 admin fee as a favour.

I said he would be friendly as he wants to sell her something, but she's happy with the car she's bought, and it's about £1000 less than similar models. The dealer has overwhelmingly positive reviews too.

About to get really busy (first day back and a full in tray/email inbox), so will catch up and update later on :)

Does he perhaps proposition all the attractive ladies he's sold cars to? As to the inflated trade in value, was that effectively a discount on the car he sold you, rather than a mark of his ardour?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I phrased it as "attractive ladies", so it's not all bad!

Got a cheque from HMRC for over a grand!!!!!

..... but it'll reduce my UC payment for the month to about £30.

    Bo*locks.

I wouldn't have claimed it back if I'd known.

    Confused, much.

You earned that money before, not now? In effect, it's savings, no?

I have no idea, it just seems a bit harsh. To give with one hand and take away with the other.

Yep it turns out they treat a tax rebate as earned income.

If I get paid anything before the 16th of this month it won't make much of a difference but that's looking unlikely!

IDS giveth, and IDS taketh away.
