But anyone who's been on the shelf for several seasons isn't a debutante, surely? Even if you "do the season" more than once, you're only a debutante the first time? Or is my terminology a hundred years or so out of date? It certainly used to be the way I've just put - you know, like in cricket, however many times you play for England, it's only your first match that's your debut.
Yes, I'm sure you're right.
They were making their debut into society.
They always used to be presented to the Monarch in white ball dresses, but that was stopped quite some time ago.........
Edit ........ in 1958.....,...QUOTE ...By 1958 the exclusivity of the Season was eroded. In the immortal words of Princess Margaret, "We had to put a stop to it. Every tart in London was getting in." UNQUOTE

However, the condensation I keep getting on the inside had frozen too.
I know what you mean, it's a real PITA.
What I found worked best was a bottle of hot (not boiling) water from the kitchen tap, poured gently onto the roof just above the windscreen (not directly on to the glass) and allowed to run down.
That warmed the glass enough to deal with the ice on both sides or, if there wasn't any on the inside, stopped the darned thing misting up as soon as I got in and started breathing in the car.0 -

I think there was a 'Season' of set balls, meets, shoots etc. etc,,including things like Henley and Ascot as well.
Everybody did all the rounds of these social events, hoping to be engaged by the end of the season.
I suppose it was a bit like having arranged marriages. Ie, you could pick a partner from that particular pool of young men and women, but not from outside it.(I just lurve spiders!)

You only do it once - it's when you're old enough and "of the right class".

The Queen abolished it.
Was that after it went rather wrong with Charles' first marriage?I think....0 -

What is the opposite of a posh alert?
It's knowing what having a monk on means without resorting to google.
I knew what it meant immediately I saw hjd's post. Is it perhaps a West Midland expression?0
