I replaced my kitchen last year. There had been a leak some years previously in the bathroom and the ceiling waspeeling. Behind the kitchen was the old outside loo and there was no insulation. It was freeeeeezing in winter. At the far end, it was very dark/dull as the lay out meant that the small window was blocked by wall units. Kitchen was OK, being only ten years old, though a bodge cheap job at the time. Getting into the pantry required contortions. Frankly it was depressing, cold and I could barely stand being in it.
It's a lot warmer now and it's so pleasant to be in. Knocked through old outside loo and a big window at the end, pantry door blocked off and the space is now an understair storage area. Ceiling isn't sagging and it's warm in winter.
A year later and it still makes me smile. I don't have proper holidays and I work in a building that is all but falling down. Having a nicely decorated home makes me happy.
Sounds like you made the right decision there.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
I don't know.....I feel like I'm on the outside looking in at the best of times, but at the moment I think I might be on a different planet from everyone else!
(In RL I mean, not on here!)
I just seem to be on a different wavelength from so many people.
Oh well. Nothing new there, I suppose!
So if you see someone bumbling along looking puzzled and perturbed, and a touch perplexed, it'll probably be Pyxis the Peculiar! :rotfl:(I just lurve spiders!)

- one piece next to the draining board, but directly under the boiler, no sockets.
- one piece beside the sink, no sockets
- one piece beside the hob, 2 sockets, used for toaster and kettle which takes up all that space
- one piece beside the hob, 2 sockets, got the breadbin there, so only half the depth available - room to make a sandwich if you juggle things.
- one double piece, 2 sockets, where the microwave sits, so there is one piece to "work at", but that reduces to zero space when I use the toaster oven as I pick that up and put it there.
So I've no real "worktop space" to speak of. Imagine if you had a good sized kitchen, but just one piece of small worktop in each corner. Forever walking around the space, nowhere to do stuff.
And the base units are also as much use as a chocolate teapot. There's the spot under the sink, that you can't get to as it's only got one door and is filled with plumbing pipes. There are four other singles, two of which require access to rear-fitted socketry and gas switch off. So there are two usable base units and two wall units (which I can't use as I'm not tall enough to reach into).
And I hate the colour
And the floor's badly fitted
Could you put the breadbin under the boiler, the micro where the breadbin was with the mini-oven on top?
Apoligies, this is a very 'man' answer, the correct answer is I too know what it feels like to have a poorly designed kitchen and empathise with youI think....0 -

I keep doing these man answers, too. It's probably because we are both men.
I keep thinking: If kitchen wall units are too high to reach, either get something to stand on or lower the units. This is obviously an incorrect thought. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Here's an off-the-wall combination solution. If you put the microwave on the floor that will;
a) clear some worktop space, and
b) provide something on which to stand, enabling the high wall units to be reached.
If that's not high enough, stick the breadbin on top and clear even more worktop space.

That would obstruct access to one of the lower level units!
One possibility is something like this:
But I expect PN would say it was too expensive.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Previous house the previous owner was short and had the work tops built lower than standard. It was a nightmare to find white goods that fitted under the work tops. Being of average height and OH being tall, it was frustrating to live with, but couldn't justify ripping the whole lot out for a few more inches.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Although I'm not particularly short, I can't reach the back of the middle shelves or the top shelves of my wall cabinets.
I have one of those kickstep rolling things, which is handy for the middle shelves and doesn't take up too much floor space.
Then when I need to get to the top shelves, which isn't very often as they're for things I don't use much, I have a small step ladder, colour-coordinated to the kitchen, sort of!
Although I'm not particularly tall, I asked the kitchen fitters to make the base units a bit higher than the average, so that there wouldn't be any degree of stoop when I was working at them.(I just lurve spiders!)

OMG I want some of those! How much? Where from? Doubt we'll actually bother since I don't cook, but could keep some of the other stuff only rarely used in something like that.
Suppose the obvious answer is one of those step ups with wheels on that go back to the floor when you put your weight on them. (link's just an example, no experience of that particular one, or any of them)0 -
