It's miserable weather outside plus there's still fireworks and it's still my job to take the dog out for his necessities. :(

Leave it as late as possible and hope the fireworks have finished by then. We used to have to do that with Avatar Dog. He was absolutely petrified of fireworks.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

It's an amazing thing that we've managed to bond with dogs so deeply despite the fact that we've allegedly evolved in Africa, and they allegedly evolved in the Arctic. So we'd be familiar with thunder and they'd be unfamiliar and totally terrified by it.

The Arctic? Do you mean wolves?

I always thought that the generic wild dog came from Africa too?

Dogs are a subspecies of grey wolves and the oldest versions are apparently huskies from the Arctic.

Although I don't remember Avatar Dog being bothered by thunder, and there must have been some during the 8+ years that we had him. He certainly didn't find thunder petrifying in the way he found fireworks. He used to try to get behind the TV, or dig holes in the carpet to hide. If we were out and about when the fireworks started, he would dash up to the nearest house and cower against the front door hoping to be let in.

I never noticed how annoying fireworks could be till I got a dog.

Our dogs never worried about fireworks, probably because they were growing up around 3 noisy kids, especially my brother who liked to bang on things regularly.

It's never fazed our cats either, last night when it sounded like WW3 outside my house, there wasn't even a raised whisker or eye lid and our previous cat was deaf so she couldn't hear it anyway. Our first cat would always disappear at loud noises but again, fireworks didn't even raise a whisker in her.

Plug the hoover in however and they were/are off like a shot!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
