    ... do and find him...

I bet it'll be one of the best stories/adventures of his life to date. He'll be whooping with excitement - probably outside running in the rain. Boys love a bit of muck and 'danger'.

Get a grip helicopter mum .... he's fit/healthy/well fed and in a safe country ... all that's going on is "a bit of rain" :)

    Greetings from sunny Montenegro! :)

What storm? Have you had bad weather? :(

Never been here before; never even been to what was Yugoslavia in the past. First thing that strikes is the strong Venetian influence, not surprising, as there were huge trade links when Venice was in its heyday. As a result, a lot of people understand Italian, which may come in useful for me, as I can speak a bit, although I suspect English will be enough in most places we go to.

The language has a lot of similarities to Russian, at least things like the usual pleasantries and the numbers., and the alphabet. Luckily, all the signs are in the Roman alphabet, and a lot are also in English!

Also interestingly, even though Montenegro isn't in the EU, it uses the euro. Our flight landed in Croatia, and that is in the EU. When our coach transfer crossed into Montenegro, there was a full border thing and we had to show our passports. Just a formality, but interesting.

Well the weather here for the week looks to be just right. Low to mid 20s during the day, and 14-16 at night. The hotel is lovely; all ultra-mod cons, full aircon if you want it, and an incredible spread for breakfast! I had a patty made just with egg-white and spinach and some chopped red peppers. Delish!
So far, the people seem extremely friendly, too!

Well, onward and upward! Catch you later! Dovidenja!

I haven't been to Montenegro, but have heard lots, mostly good. It looks beautiful. A colleague of mine makes regular trips both there and to Slovenia. Both sounds wonderful. The only downside I've heard is that being outside of the EU, Montenegro has greater levels of poverty and while it is beautiful needs to get in he EU to get funding to upgrade its infrastructure and restore some of its crumbling heritage. Would be interested to hear your take on that.

I have been trying for years to get DH on an Adriatic cruise so we can get a peep at that part of Italy, Slovenia, Montenegro, Croatia, maybe Albania. Then we could pick the places we liked most to go back and explore in more detail. No luck so far but definitely on my to do list.

TBH, the number of incidents does sound rather high to me - considering they are only doing 2-6 900 mile round trips per year. a run of the mill haulage firm would, I suspect, be extremely disappointed if their fleet was that bad.

It sounds rather high because of what they record as an incident. One involved the convoy setting off 3 hours later than originally planned, because there was some problem on the road up ahead. That just seems like good sense to me.

Another was "In January last year, the convoy travelled through the centre of Glasgow during a fierce storm". Doesn't it rain in Glasgow nearly all the time?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    Indeed.

It sounds like they have been recording any deviation from the route or timing as an incident, in addition to any accidents/breakdowns - and the wackies are claiming that makes the convoys unsafe?

    Ha ha ha...

I am pleased to say, although I've held my breath every second of the weekend, that since Friday night's events .... it has been instantly and absolutely and completely noise and child free throughout and over the entire weekend. It's as if they were all magically disappeared away ..... all of them. Not a trace.

Clearly some serious grounding going on.... but how long can it last ....

It's been really nice and relaxing (apart from the fear at every squeak that it was about to start again).

I'n the same. Back when I was a student I used to devour travel books like Europe on $10 a day and the like, and I used to read about inter-rail tickets. Despite what everyone thinks, students didn't live like kings and I couldn't afford more than camping holidays in France and Spain. I spent my summers working to fund my living away from home.

I didn't know how people could afford the cost of inter-rail tickets, but more fool me I was a smoker back then so a huge chunk of my earnings was llterally vanishing into thin air. When I was a post-grad student in my 20s and too old for inter-rail I made up for it by getting a cheap flight to Athens and the slow train back arranged by the DB travel office in London. Don't know if that;'s even possible now.
