Yes, I didn't rate " are you being served" or " Young Hyacinth".
However, I have great hope for "Hancock's Half Hour" which is on Thursday at 9pm.
I was too young for the original series, although I vaguely remember some of the repeats. And I vaguely remember the radio series too.
Kevin McNally plays Hancock, (he was in the original Poldark too!), and Jon Culshaw is playing Sid James. I don't recognise the actors playing Kenneth Williams or Hattie Jaques.(I just lurve spiders!)

Talking about Hancock got me thinking about old TV actors.
Does anyone remember "The Army Game" and the later spin-off "Bootsy and Snudge"? Starring Alfie Bass and Bill Fraser.
I was very lickle, but I remember finding them very funny! They can't have been on very late in the evening at all, if I remember seeing them!

I don't remember it from the original broadcasts but I've seen however many episodes survived, likewise Hancock and many other brilliant comedies from years gone by.
I suspect that, if I were pushed, I'd actually have to say that the radio ones were better for me - I love The Goon Show, Hancock's Half Hour, The Navy Lark and, for something a little later (i.e. just late enough that I can remember hearing some first time around) The Men From The Ministry.
The attraction for me with those, and the older TV comedies, is that the humour was just "there", it wasn't in your face. It didn't rely upon crudity or anything like that, mainly some wonderful plays on words and superb timing of the deliveries.
Most importantly, the humour didn't have to be explained, like it all too often does nowadays because the programmes are being made for syndication to other parts of the world where the British sense of humour is not always understood.0 -
You're right! I liked the Navy Lark.
If I remember correctly, that was on a Sunday in the early afternoon, so we would have had our trad Sunday roast and pudding and custard and then listened to that while were having our cup of tea. (Made with loose leaf tea in a pot, with cups and saucers and a tea strainer).
Hearing some of it later as an adult, there was some inuendo, though it was clean inuendo, and double meanings, so that us kiddywinks just took the face value, but the adults had a bit more of a giggle!
I've just watched an episode of The Army game on Youtube!
All the stalwarts of the Carry On films started in it, and the producers got the idea from Ian Carmichael's "Privates on Parade", as it was about conscription to do National Service in the 50s.(I just lurve spiders!)

Apparently it started in 1957 and ended in 1961, but then Bootsy and Snudge took over.
Most of the episodes have been lost. There were loads and loads!(I just lurve spiders!)

Won't quote the rest in case it is one of the DQWDs, but:"Freehold houses, kitchen, outhouses, pleasure house, garden and lands at .... now in the occupation of myself, and the adjoining shop, for her life, then to her issue. If no issue then to the children of [another nephew]"
What is a pleasure house?
