The trouble with not sleeping is you feel like !!!!!! the whole of the next day.

Insomnia is terrible. I suffered dreadfully with it in my teens and twenties and I have a real dread of it returning.

I find that if I try to go to bed at the same time every night it really helps as does listening to podcasts or speech radio quietly. If it comes to it, taking a sleepy anti-histamine helps in extremis. And never, ever, ever any caffeine after lunch unless I'm on a really long drive.

Sorry if it sounds like a nag but there was a definite correlation between stopping smoking and improved sleep. If you look on Google Scholar there are plenty of studies showing a link, e.g.

    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091743584710462
Among both mates and females, smoking was associated with difficulty initiating sleep, and difficulty waking up. Excessive daytime sleepiness was related to smoking only for females while nightmares and disturbing dreams were related to smoking only among males. Conclusions. Smoking was associated with difficulty initiating sleep and with a constellation of symptoms suggestive of sleep fragmentation. Sleep disturbance may be more prevalent among smokers due to the stimulant effects of nicotine, nightly withdrawal, an increased prevalence of sleep disordered breathing relative to nonsmokers, and/or an association with psychological disturbance. These results have important clinical and public health implications for reduction of the disease and disability associated with smoking and sleep disturbance.

Do with that as you will.

Well I went sofa hunting today with some of my remuneration at risk which is definitely not a bonus. Anyone have strong feelings either way about Ikea sofas? I sat on some very comfy ones at about the £500 mark and I thought that I'm likely to struggle for a mid-low priced sofa in Aus to get better quality as they're so hard to compete with in a market of 24,000,000 people (not that I want to drag Brexit onto the Nice People thread you understand!).

I did a piece of company research today on Honeywell. Before today I thought that they mostly do ATMs and EFTPOS equipment. It turns out that they are responsible for almost all of the US nuclear weapons progam: they make all of the UF6 in the US that is in turn made into U235 required to make a nuke (and is also required for nuclear power). They produce 85% of the non-nuclear parts that are required to make a nuke. Oh and as part of a joint venture they operate the only US Government factory which is able to make, maintain and disassemble nukes. The only thing they don't do is turn the UF6 into actual fissile material.

I can't imagine we'll be holding Honeywell shares for long after our next investment meeting!

I'm investigating BT tomorrow (the telephones people). I suspect that they'll be much more straightforward. The trouble is if you're going to recommend getting out of a company you have to be very sure of your ground.

Anyone know anything dodgy about BT? Do the make pron or cigarettes or military stuff for example? Any dirt would be most welcome.

I've always been an insomniac, even as a small child. Sometimes it goes through a bad phase (as it is at the moment), other times I can manage a what to me is a normal night of 5 hours.

8 hours is an absolute impossibility unless I am very very ill and even then, it is not guaranteed to happen.

Two weeks ago, over 3 nights I managed the grand total of 8 hours sleep.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    .
Managed to walk out with a pack of (5?) peanut/caramel bars (like Marathons), a pack of cheesecakes, a big bag of fruit pastilles and some crumpets.

So that's £2.56 spent on unnecessary goodies, purely for gratuitous scoffing.

But we all need a treat sometimes, and you can't really say that you spent oodles of money for nice haul! :)

Went to Garston Walk in Centre yesterday (they don't just do walk in stuff, but that seems to be what it's called) to have my stitches out. Was really made up to see they have 2 bat roosts in the car park! :j I guess that there were bats in the roof of the old hospital that was previously on the site. There's a lovely walled garden at the back of the building too, with what I think is the original entrance to the old hospital as its back wall. Full of hugs ferns and those sword plant things that I think come from New Zealand, and some tree ferns too. Very restful to sit and look out at it while waiting.

Went to visit MiL in the afternoon. She was a bit sleepy, and also having some trouble breathing intermittently, but seemed glad to see us. We stayed about an hour, which seems to be as long as she can manage. So 2 car outings in one day! Having a bed day to recover today. <rolls eyes smiley>

Such a gorgeous sunny day to be out driving yesterday, though bitter cold. Today it's grey and cloudy and we've had a bit of mizzle. So glad we made the effort, enjoyed all the daffodils and snowdrops and crocuses (croci?) in the sunshine! :)

I really need saving from myself ..... in an upbeat mood yesterday due to the car sailing through the check, I sauntered off to Ldl ... to buy some treats and sweeties.

I'm pretty sure that I have cravings to eat more carbs if I don't sleep properly. Maybe it's the same for you?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Is that the programme about a family where every day was a new year, with all the technology and music changing all the time?

Yes, but there's been two similar programmes recently.

This one's been more about the weekends and leisure.
The other one focussed more of food/kitchenalia.

Blessedly I've rarely suffered from insomnia, about twice a year. I try not to eat much before bedtime and usually head upstairs about 9.30 ( so rock n roll ). If I do struggle, I listen to a TED talk and find that 10-15 minutes is enough to make me feel sleepy.

I take it you don't invest in a company that is deemed unethical? I used to bank with the Co-op then they started getting all ethical which just plain annoyed me and secondly they didn't seem to mind having me for a customer, which seemed plain hypocritical.
