It's to do with seemingly solid materials which convert to liquid if shaken sufficiently, and will revert to solid over time if left alone.
Aberfan (mentioned quite a few posts ago, IIRC, unless twas in DT) was a typical example, although in that case it was mainly because the water content in part of the waste tip increased to the point it became unstable and slipped. That slip set the rest off in a thixotropic change.
Clays can exhibit this property too, as can snow in avalanche conditions.0 -

It's about how hard stuff can become liquified when lots of water's added to it .... and then set again once the water's gone. And similar, pretty dull, stuff.
It can cause unexpected events to occur.
In the main .... you never need to know about it really.0 -
