It's about how hard stuff can become liquified when lots of water's added to it

In some cases it doesn't need water adding, the water's already there.

Thixotropic mud and clay is something that builders need to be very aware of - due to the structure of the particles, usually flat platelets which stay standing like a house of cards, with water occupying the "spaces". It can appear perfectly solid but can take as little as a heavy booted footfall to break the structure and set off a chain reaction over a large area, releasing the water and away it all goes.

( no, it's not someone who studies kiwi-like birds! :D)

Surely the latter would be a rhealogist?

I convinced myself there WERE birds in the roof ... so plucked up the courage to go bang on a neighbour's door :)

A random neighbour.... whose name I didn't even know. Just had the odd nod "hello" in the past.

He popped round and had a look, nothing. He said the birds on the roof are very loud and it's probably them on the outside.....

But, billy bonus - it turns out there's a fitted light in the roof AND a fitted loft ladder! Didn't know about those!

And, double bonus, he also topped up my gas boiler with water for me when I asked him to.... so that won't be giving me a red light and no hot water in the coming months. Win!

    billy bonus :rotfl:

    whats he like ?

They're like elephants up there now. I've two baby seagulls (size of chihuahuas) on some "flat bit of the roof" pecking at it and fighting ... I've been out into the garden to look up and can see their heads... but inside here it's like elephants stomping about!

I probably need some remote control helicopter/drone to chase them off! That'll be a full-time job for 2 months or so until they bugg4h off to wherever they go once they've left their nest (15' away).

    Get a plastic eagle! :D

Or stick a plastic shark on your roof! That'll confuse them!

(Might get you into trouble with Planning, though!)

I re-read the story of the Oxford Shark! We could do with more people like Bill Heine! Especially now!

Do read what the Secretary of State's inspector said about it, when Heine was appealing against the Council's decision. It's hilarious, but also very gratifying!

I remember seeing the shark. You just don't get a sense of scale from the photos. Massive and hilarious.

I had the red light and no hot water. Managed to top it up myself but the pressure dropped straight away.

Turned out that a pipe to a radiator had come loose and as quick as I was adding water to the system it was leaking out of the pipe.
