Re starting a business. I remember when I was at business school, they dud not teach entrepreneurialism. It was considered innate rather than a taught skill.
If you have that innate skill and are driven, that is far more important than having a few grand behind you. The only people who then have and advantage are those lucky people who have all three.
There are lots of stories of immigrants in particular turning up in a country and having those factors, though not the money, and making a great go of things.
There's also plenty of evidence that when the less hungry and driven and now wealthy kids of those parents are left the business they often don't run it as well. They lack the drive and determination to drive the business forward.
Additionally, for those businesses that don't have lots of start up capital or a wealthy backer, there is also evidence that you will at some point hit a wall and not be able to grow further without loans and investments. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? PN, the answer is often very hard work, often doing two jobs; the day job to keep the wolf at bay and the 'idea' in all the other spare hours.
Yes, it helps to start young, before you have a family, and perhaps even before having a mortgage, as then you have the time and energy.PasturesNew wrote: »The trouble is ... where does the money come from to fund people, to pay the bills etc, in the early times, when there's no money coming in, or irregular money. That's a big limiter: not having anybody to stump up the necessaries.
Bank loans, start up funders, mortgages, savings.
Bank loans are easier to get with a decent business plan and being a home owner with some equity.
There is also the feeling that banks are more likely to lend if you can persuade them that you could raise the money but it is more sensible to take a loan within the business.
I think when I first started the bank agreed to fund 60% of what I needed, backed by me signing a personal guarantee. Owning my home rather than renting would make that personal guarantee worth something.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Surprisingly not too bad this morning.
That stupid song has turned into a bit of an earwig though.

Morning HAMISH!!!!!!
The weather is very weird here, it's refusing to start autumn. We're still getting daytime maxima of 27C . Nuts.0 -
Correspondingly refusing to start Spring here. 13 degrees and drizzly here currently. We had an unusually warm snap last week, but generally this spring the tems have been a bit lower than seasonal norms (that's how it feels to me anyway). Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Jealous - unsurprisingly it's raining and about 12 degrees here.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Cripes, brrrrr. That's about the minimum temperature tonight so I've dug out the extra fluffy blanket to go over the duvet and the winter jammies.
I'm not sure I could live much north of the Med any more. I've gone soft. It's a shame North Africa is such a damn mess as the climate looks great.0 -
Yes. Yes I am.

It's a crying shame. That used to be the rich part of Africa. It has great beaches, interesting Roman and Egyptian ruins to go walk around and warm, welcoming people. And let's not forget the oil, lots of it. Such a shame about the corrupt nepotistic governments and the bloodthirsty terrorists. It could be a wonderful part of the world. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
