Anybody watching Grand Designs, Isle of Wight?

Odd one... youngish couple, moved to IoW to buy house; he had a brain bleed and was in a coma.... so they bought a bit of land with a beach instead, just under £1mill. Then borrowed another £1.2 million to do the build. Then got a bridging loan - and is now on site with the glass on a lorry and the men awaiting payment and he's on the phone trying to get the money to pay for it from somewhere.

90 minutes later he'd got the money through.

    Freeview channel 47

£540k bridging loan's run out ... and now he needs more cash to keep it going.

    Up to £1.8mill now.

They've moved into it, even though it's not finished.

    Here it is http://onthewight.com/2015/09/24/grand-designs-isle-of-wight-house-photos-stunning/

just caught the 2nd half of the prog on another channel 127Freesat
and they are reckless...good result for them that actually managed to move in...noted the laundry shoot.....the kids will be down that next. haha. Could never get into debt over anything really...and his near death situation is understandable having been put in an induced coma myself but it did not make me want to go money spend crazy at all so I would think it is the way they are Wreckless and a bit spoilt really. regards Dianne

I couldn't help wondering how a young couple with a health history managed to get such a huge finance deal? (I didn't see the programme).
    Or have I missed something?

Hehe, hopefully "pieces" is what it'll chop my lawn into :rotfl:

LOL, I had to think about that one ;)

Another good one was the stage name of the variety artist H. Vernon Watson, who called himself Nosmo King - because that was what was written on the (double) backstage scene dock doors when he was trying to think of a name.

Just be sure you don't have any couch grass or perennial weeds in land you're tilling - or you'll have a gazillieon weeds and a new lawn made entirely of couch grass.

Finally got round to getting eyes tested - last done 6 years ago! Today went to pick up the new glasses. Ashamed to say my varifocals are Dior! :o Had a job finding anything that I liked that actually suited my face. Seeing as have to wear glasses a lot of the time now I figured that even though expensive, cost per wear wouldn't be too bad! ;) :money:

Not quite so happy with the new reading glasses, but it's prob a matter of getting used to them. They were a lot cheaper, but look nice with just a subtle red cabochon plastic stone on the arm to jazz them up a bit. :) Need to sit a lot closer to screen with them though. Might just stick with the old ones for computer.

I wondered that too. My experience/world would mean "Buying a house, he's in a coma, he'll probably struggle to ever work again .... better get down the council and get your name down for a 1-bed flat".

    So, who were these people???

They were property developers, land finders, etc. So they were in the world where this stuff happens and they also had wealthy people to call upon for loans etc.

Having come out of the coma, house purchase abandoned, the first thing they did was shell out over £900k for a plot of land.

I doubt many of us could raise a £500k bridging loan, even if everybody vaguely related to us had to line up and empty their bank accounts to underwrite it and lend us the balance :)

Rarely does anybody "start from scratch", or do anything much without "wealth lurking in the family tree" ..... hard work alone doesn't make stuff possible.

You and I'd have simply become a "carer and husband living in a 1-bed flat" :)

Here's their company solent-house.co.uk/the-team - not a link, don't want them to spot we're chatting about them :)

It's a bit like those articles about a couple's lovely new home which has a really beautiful kitchen that was an affordable price because "luckily, Paul's Dad is a kitchen fitter."

Maggie I find my varifocals are best for the computer - apparently it counts as "middle distance" rather than reading :) Glad you like your new glasses. I think the problem with reading glasses when you're used to varifocals is that you need to remember to look through the middle of the lens IYSWIM. If you continue to have problems with them, take them back and see if the angle of the lenses needs adjusting :)
The optician says I could do with some new ones as my right eye's become more short-sighted as a cataract is starting to form, but they are so dear they'll just have to wait a while!
