When I went to secondary school at the end of every PE lesson we had a shower before getting change dback into uniform. DD claims that at her school they don't have showers and often don't even change for PE - too me this is Ewww. Was my experience unusual? (Yes they were naked communal showers but it was just what was expected so no one worried or got silly about it)

We had showers available but few used them. Girls are more reticent about communal showers. Very occasionally after muddy cross country we would be told that we all had to shower. Even then three quarters of the class would have an excuse why they couldn't possibly shower. The amount of instantly sprouting verrucas was unbelievable.

There is a balance between smelly people wandering around school in at least their non smelly uniform and the smell of wet towels that had to be dragged around for the rest of the day!

    Sorry to hear about this.

Are you absolutely sure it's an EPA, not an LPA? That sounds very strange. You can read up about it here http://www.ageuk.org.uk/money-matters/legal-issues/powers-of-attorney/enduring-power-of-attorney/

yes the letter from solicitor states Enduring power of attorney which is about finances not health which was odd because the letter states that the reasons are that my oldest son feels Mum can not make decisions any longer for herself...his statement not a medical persons statement I guess then....

For Viva... I'm sure you're aware etc, but thought I'd mention it in any case. FreeREG are looking for people in Herts for transcriptions.

".... has a lot of data .... urgently seeking transcribers...."

Thanks, didn't know that. I may well contact them. I've taught myself secretary hand so it would be good to use it on some local documents, especially if it doesn't involve much travel. I know some people at the Herts archives, so may ask there too. Much appreciated.

EPAs cannot be made currently. They ceased to be made around ten years ago, but existing ones are still valid. Is it possible your mother made one under the old rules all that time ago?

This info from Age Uk explains the procedure:

    Enduring power of attorney (EPA)

Enduring powers of attorney (EPA) has been replaced by lasting power of attorney (LPA). However, if you made and signed an EPA before 1 October 2007, it’s still valid.

You might already be using it without having registered it, so that someone can act on your behalf (unlike an LPA, which must be registered before use). This is fine, until you become unable to make your own decisions relating to financial and property matters.

Once this happens, the EPA must be registered before your attorney can take any further action on your behalf. At this point it’s the responsibility of your attorney to register the EPA with the Office of the Public Guardian.

Remember that an EPA only covers decisions about your property and financial affairs; an attorney doesn’t have power under an EPA to make decisions about your health and care. You might want to consider setting up an LPA for health and care decisions to work alongside the existing EPA.

So, if the EPA was set up say ten years ago, and mother's condition has now deteriorated, the EPA needs to be registered so the named attorney can use it.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I also gave the "trench" across one of the lawns a turning over with the fork. This is part of my cunning plan for dealing with the moss on one lawn. The worst of it is in the half further from the house, so that's going to get dug up and turned into my veggie patch. The "trench" will be a flower bed dividing the remaining half-decent lawn from the veggie patch.

    An update on "the trench";

It got a couple of bags of compost dug in the other day so, since I did survive the ministrations of the dentist (which is another story) yesterday, I invaded the garden centre on the way home and have been finishing "the trench" this morning.

It now has a log-roll border all round (OK that may possibly be a bit passe, or naff, but it does tidy it up), a length of low fencing net erected on the veggie patch side and eight assorted rose bushes de-potted into it, then another bag of compost scattered on top - of the soil, not the bushes ;)

There is a gap at one end of the new bed, room for one more rose bush, but I've got one to take out when I attack the mossy half of the lawn so that bush can be moved to fill the gap when the soil in the new bed has compacted a bit.

A good job jobbed methinks, so 'tis time for a well-earned cuppa

The next stage will be to dig up the veggie patch half of the lawn and work a lot of compost into it ready for next year, but that can wait a few weeks. I'll be cheating on that too. Having found how tough it was digging up the turves to make the new rose bed, I've splashed out on what has now been christened "The Hun" - since its proper name is "a tiller" :rotfl:

As mentioned in my update on "the trench" I did survive the ministrations of the dentist yesterday - and a what a surprise it was !!!

Firstly, since it's been a very long time since I last saw a dentist, I was still expecting the awful drill powered by cords running over a series of pulleys and making a nasty high-pitched "weeeeeee" sound right next to my ear - which I always hated. But, unbeknown to me, they've modernised and it was powered by a small electric motor which I could hardly hear at all.

When I mentioned that during a gap in the work, the assistant laughed and said that they'd had a nervous client in the waiting room the other week who was almost ready to run out of the door when she heard something going "weeeeeee" - until she was told that it was just the secretary putting some papers through the shredder ;)

Rather impressed with the treatment too. I've only ever been used to traditional fillings - dig a hole and press in a metal based gloop - so I wasn't sure what she'd be able to do with a chipped edge of one molar and what felt like the entire quarter of another missing. However, she used something different and built up a replacement structure for both - although she did say that she couldn't be certain that the worse of the two would last but she'd rather try that rather than go for an extraction straightaway.

It doesn't half feel funny now, though - I've got so used to using the tip of my tongue to dig out any bits of food that lodged in the gap, or top make sure there aren't any, that I keep trying, even though I know there isn't a gap any more :rotfl:

All in all, a surprisingly pleasant experience.

Thank you for all that info.....It seems likely that is the case then otherwise the solicitor would be processing the LPA document instead. My Dad died in 2000 just 6 months after we moved from Wallington/Beddington (where Mum and Dad lived also) to Bexhill and Mum was not pleased with us for moving away and a lot changed of course for her without Dad in 2000, he actually was doing everything in the home... and the cooking. when we said we are now going to France to live, the heavens fell..

    Best Wishes Dianne
