Thanks to this thread, I found out who the winner is. Terrible song. I liked ours too, lets hope it continues to get airplay.

Doozer: When you are sober and not otherwise tied up, which way do you put striped carpet on a landing if the stripes going up the stairs are going to hit the landing at 90 degrees?

    I'd cheat, with one of the following, in reverse order;

    1) lay it with the stripes diagonal, so it's "wrong" everywhere.
    2) use checked instead of striped
    3) use plain
    ;)

    I'll never forget the salesman's face when we went to order the carpet for our newly extended lounge;
Salesman; "And has madam any colour in mind?"
    Mum; "Yes, dirt colour"

Well, first of all I forgot what time Eurovision was on, (these light evenings confuse one so!), and ended up watching Dad's Army (the one with "Don't tell him, Pike!"). Then when I realised and turned over, it was halfway through. I hit the record button, just as well, because I fell asleep during Austria's go!

Anyway, I've just watched the recording of the last acts and the results.

The trouble with the phone votes is that, like in XFactor etc., the public are never going to vote for the better song/act, or for the most talent. However, phone votes are really big business, and probably pay for the whole shebang, so they're never going to go back to just a jury. :( Which means shows like this are never ever again going to be about real talent.

A couple of weeks ago, I watched the Young Choir of the Year. What bliss! A proper talent show, with proper judges and proper comments. And, joy of joys, no tedious pause between "And the winner is..........." and the name.

(As someone who competes in choir competitions, I know a bit about singing, (though no expert), and it can be very frustrating sometimes, watching the other 'talent' shows!)

However, it was the first time I'd heard the UK's song all the way through, and I thought it was the best song we'd put in it for ages. I thought the choice of singers and their performance was pretty good, too.

Mind you. I do have a connection with Ukraine, so although I didn't particularly like the song, (although it was sung well), I can't help feeling pleased for my Ukrainian friends, on more than one level! :D

I had some more burnt bread and butter for breakfast, in bed, while watching the recording, and now I'm covered in crust crumbs!

Toast crumbs in bed are less of a disaster than they used to be. In the days of blankets, crumbs required a complete remake of the bed. It's much easier with duvets.

Still very upset that UK weren't in the top ten....
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Sadly, I think that's true. We can't always be that bad to come near the bottom. I liked this song.

Most of the other songs were more spectacularly staged.

True. The staging was boring in comparison.

    Russia's staging was outstanding.

But it's supposed to be a song competition! :(

(I know, I know; it ceased being that a long time ago). :(

It should really be called The Eurovision Song/SexyArtist/OutlandishCostume/SpecialStageEffects Contest

It's hard without being there, but I think I agree with him.

You're not having that Crucial Trading carpet in the photo are you?
In my opinion and what I've got .... not that you've asked, but I happen to have stripey carpets....

My stairs have two turns in them. The landing carpet has the stripes lengthways - long stripes. At right angles to the stripes on the stairs.

Stripes on stairs are going back to front, following the tread of your feet. When standing on the top step the carpets are then going left to right.

All the carpets upstairs are the same/striped. All the stripes go in the same direction up there.

Looking at the photo you provided

If I look over my banister like that then the stairs and landing are striping in the same directions, I've just got a turn that joins the end of the stairs to the landing, which means the stripes turn before they get to the landing.

chris_m: diagonal stripes would look awful, must be a tripping hazard and would cost a fortune due to wastage. Have plain beige now, so want something a little more adventerous.

doozer: most definitely not that adventurous, beige, browns and grey stripes.

Pastures: I could change direction at the very top of the stairs, carpet guy thought that wasn't quite a good option as the main part of the landing would not look right, as opposed to having the extension part not looking right. But I am unsure.

The wimp option is to replace with similar to what we have now.

Please don't post any more pics of stripy carpets - I scrolled quickly through the last one as it felt migraine-inducing!
