I didn't know of the connection to Sherlock Holmes. I enjoyed the story. I had not read it before.
(So far I have received a piece of family history, a poem, and a new short story - it pays to follow links , no matter how tenuous the link or tedious the sign-up process
)
Conan Doyle did visit Ballarat on an Australian speaking tour but that was in 1920 and the story was written in 1891.
Ballarat is famous for gold mining. Population about 100,000. About hour north-west of Melbourne.0 -
I used to live in Melbourne Anne. As a kid my family went to look at a house in Ballarat. It was Victorian style with a big verandah. We stayed in Melbourne though, then moved back here.
I have Aussie rels in the UK, Aussie rels in Australia, British rels here and did have British rels in Aus, but they have no died. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Wow. I'm very moved by the poem, the book and Anne's interaction with PN. How very wonderful! I hope you've both gained something. I certainly have

Perhaps these are the reasons why it's okay to be yourself to a fair degree on the internet. If there is something that really don't want to be public, don't share it in a public place.
Did anyone answer your prawn cracker question, PN? You need to scoff them asap, they go soggy very quickly indeed. Lightning speed.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Would this be a good time to mention a certain person in t'other place?

On the subject of t'other place... I have posted a pic of that green dress with me in it.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I really enjoyed that television show. A bit unusual that each episode was a different length.0

Definitely strange for the authors to stay the same age over so many years. I guess teacher's book most likely.0

I have access to some paid newspaper sites and happy to help - I am very curious about things

In Australia we get free access using our free National Library membership to paid newspaper sites such as Gale Newspapers online which includes the Times Archive.
Don't you have an equivalent through your public library system?0 -

that's a shame!AnneYoungAu wrote: »I was born here. On my father's side all my forebears had arrived in Australia by the 1850s. Strong connections still to our English cousins though.
My grandmother would refer to England as home even though her grandfather was born here and his maternal grandparents and grandparents emigrated in the 1830s.
No convicts
I was hoping for some juicy skeletons popping out of some cupboards!
Sounds like your relatives were founding fathers! Wow!
(Just thought..... if they weren't convicts, perhaps they were guards?)Doozergirl wrote: »

Yes, I agree with Doozer...... you have eat them quickly as they go soft. You can still eat them soft, but they're not as nice. I'd finish them up today, if I were you.

Something like my GGGGGG-grandfather's brother's son.
Unfortunately.... you can only eat so much in a day unless you're force feeding yourself. So I've still got some left even though I was nibbling them throughout the day.Yes, I agree with Doozer...... you have eat them quickly as they go soft.
