Any NPs familiar with New York City well for a family holiday? Only been for a day trip before. Will enquire on other boards as well but seem to recall a few people seemed to know their way about. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0

This came up on the NP thread a while ago, and you might be able to find it. I remember that the High Line walk was recommended.
I'd recommend going to Battery Park, then taking the free ferry to Staten Island and back. You get a great view of the Statue of Liberty. That's all very MSE.
You can also go on a trip to one of the islands in the harbour.
Oh, and MOMA is simply amazing. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Hi I just came because I found you had linked to my blog post and there is a connection to Jean Bennett.
Can I help?
Can you tell me about the book you are researching?

You need some "no ball games" signs PN. We have them here. They aren't always observed but at least some take them onboard and stop.
Bloody nuisance! Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Blimey .... isn't the Internet "creepy"
I bought a "random book", every page is hand written by different girls and it gives their name and age. I am going through it trying to find out who they all were and what happened to them all.
There are about 50 pages and about 45 individual girls, aged 12-13, written mostly 1929-1937. I worked out it was a girls school, it felt like it was in the south - and I'm now confidant it's Sherborne.
One page contained a piece written by "Jean Bennett, Dec 14th, Age 12 years old" in 1933. Called "The Sea".
I'd guess that the book is written by a group of girls who all boarded at the same school, in the same dorm. The girls who wrote changed over time, but the book remained - so may have been a book retained by the house-mother....
Often, the girls will write similar pieces, as if they've been told to write about XYZ and so they did.
Jean's "The Sea" was a poem of five verses, four lines each....
Oh for the sound of the billowy sea
And the foaming waves great roar
Oh such is the life for a lad like me
And the cry of a wreck near shore .....
ending with:
Oh merry are we
In our ship so tall
When our life is the sea
And the world our ball.
In the same year, others who wrote were: Naswyth, Smythies, Southwell, Clementi-Smith, Dale. Some, or all, of whom may have been her dorm-chums.0 -

I will not stoop to the behaviours of "typical Council" morals.
And, that would disturb everybody else in the place, who are already wishing the doofer would just get knocked out on a rebound.
It stopped... hitting the fence and the box of glass for recycling might've prompted an "OI" from the mother.... what is annoying is that parents have the power to control irritation, victims don't. They can stick their head under the duvet and think "wish he wouldn't do that" .... knowing they simply have to say one word and it instantly stops.0 -
Prawn cracker advice needed. Yesterday I was provided with a free bag of prawn crackers from the chinese takeaway. Nice, big bag it was. Now, I do enjoy a prawn cracker or 3.... maybe not 50-60 though in one sitting.
They are something I've never bought as they are "surplus to requirements" and would normally be an additional cost, and I don't buy things just because they exist, so I've never ordered any.... just only had 1-2 when a bag was passed round a few times in the past.
They were in a sealed plastic bag, which I snipped and clipped. Eaten some and will snack on the remainder.
But - what can I expect of these prawn crackers with regard to them going off/going soft? What's their expected shelf life for crispiness etc?
If they last 1-2 days, I'll try to scoff them all today.
If they last 1-2 weeks, I can go easier on them.0 -
Hi - the internet is definitely not a place to hide.

I remember Jean very fondly and your post caused me to remember her to my husband. Jean looked after me briefly as a child when I was on my way to boarding school. She had the most beautiful red hair and lived in a very elegant house in London. She also looked out for my father when he went to study in England.
Jean was born in 1921 in Kent. Her mother was Gertrude, known as Kiddie. Jean was my grandmother's first cousin, that is my first cousin twice removed.
Her date of birth matches the book you found. I didn't know where she went to school or her fiends or school mates. Sherborne School for Girls is certainly possible, And moreover Gay, Jean's niece Gay confirms it in the comments to my post. The family were living in Charminster near Dorchester Dorset in 1939. Jean's father was in the navy.
Jean's cousins who also went to Sherborne according to Gay were Ann Gillett born 1911 and Jean Mary Magee born 1917 known as Moll.
thanks

Thanks for that. I realised from your blog that you didn't have a lot of information on Jean's line. Others appeared in the book a few times, Jean just the once.
I've "guessed" that the Jean in the book was "your Jean" based purely on the girls in the book appearing "a bit wealthy" - and your Jean's birthdate matching and her appearing to come from "a bit of a wealthy family". So it's a wild guess on my part, no hard evidence/certificates. But I felt she fitted.
Come back in 10 minutes and I will provide a photo of the poem/page for you.0
