    Good news Sue!

My printer is also a scanner and copier. Not a fax machine, though that hasn't proved a problem yet. There used to be a way of sending a fax through a computer, using print to fax option in Word, not sure if that still exists.

I use the fax for some specific transfers, as the bank won't accept instructions by email, and they have to have them in writing with my signature on them, so it is still useful. This bank is too far away to pop into!
It's also useful if the internet fails and I have something urgent to send.

Sorry if I'm moaning a lot at the moment! :o
It's just that that price hike yesterday was such a shock!
I might email Sainsbury's to ask why.

Plus their Simnel cake had only eleven marzipan balls on it. I know that that is a traditional variant, (it can be eleven or twelve), but it looks like they've gone for the cheaper option tradition. :(

There's a conspiracy afoot, I'm sure of it.

To top it all, the Simnel cake was dry. :(

Pyxis I thought the Simnel cake was only supposed to have 11 balls anyway tbh, but i can quite understand your feeling they've put 11 on just because it's cheaper!

Out of curiosity I've just looked through my cookbooks; four have a recipe for Simnel cake. Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood and a slightly older version of the Good Housekeeping Cookery Book (1998) all say 11 balls of marzipan, while the most recent version of the Good Housekeeping one says 11 or 12, depending on whether you feel Judas should be included or not!

I know just what you mean though. There's a particular pizza we buy occasionally which used to have six olives on top and now has only five

As an aside, I've noticed that the 1998 GH book assumes you will probably use dried herbs, whereas the new one assumes you'll use fresh ones where possible. Interesting how things like that change.

    Sue That's excellent news :)

viva We didn't watch Panorama, suspecting it would prompt a need for brick-throwing. What in particular made you want to throw a brick?

The eleven can be the twelve apostles minus Judas, or the twelve can be Jesus plus the eleven 'good' apostles. I suppose the twelve could be just the twelve apostles! As Judas was pretty good until he got swayed by the filthy lucre! :D
Or maybe the Pharisees were threatening his family? Who knows? :D

I turned over to Panorama after Viva's post, but as I'd missed the beginning, I wasn't sure what tack the programme was taking.

To send faxes from your PC, you need an old fax modem. The sort of modem we used before ADSL.

It's easier to subscribe to an internet fax gateway, or do as Pyxis does and have an all-in-one that does faxes. I still have a proper fax machine that gets used about once a year.

Pyxis, I have a colour laser printer that I bought years ago when I needed to produce lots of coloured output for an important client. I just checked the cost of a new set of toner cartridges - £650!

Makes me glad I've got ink-jet, then!

I do wonder if it isn't something for the Monopolies Commission, or some Gvt. watchdog agency anyway.

A set of compatible toners is £100, but that's for 5000 pages, so not too bad. IF I ever print that many pages in colour.

I'm just trying to design a brochure for a new venture I'm setting up, so I might start printing lots of colour stuff.

If you are mansplaining away, and your DW in exasperation says "I'm not as stupid as I look, you know", what is the correct response?

I'm afraid that my sense of humour got the better of me, and I agreed politely! :D
