How to remove wiring from a sky dish

  • Thanks for the pics frugalmacdugal, they didn't look a bit like this but maybe when we get the boxlike cover off then that will expose what you've shown here.
  • Hi,

connectors shouldn't be corroded, if covered, booted, and no doubt smeared in a waterproof grease, though a pairs of pliers might be needed as fitter probably gave them a wee twist, just unscrew them anti-clockwise.

Not sure what box-like cover you mean. The pictures posted by Frugal McD may not be exactly like yours, the LNB (the bit that sticks out from the clamp towards the centre of the dish) may have the connections coming straight out the back rather than being turned 90 degrees but the pictures posted plus the connector posted earlier should tell you that all you have to do is remove the boot (slide it off or cut it off) and inside you will find the connector, which should not be corroded due to it being protected by the boot.
  • Thanks so much, I hope it doesn't come down to us doing it but we are now prepared.

I will update this thread after Monday.

I looked at the bit where the wires go into the dish, it's at shoulder height so easy to see. The cables go into the bit that protrudes from the front of the dish. The cables are covered by a plastic casing so I couldn't see whether the ends were as the picture posted on here.

If we do have to do the job ourselves what do you people advise. If we can unscrew the connectors or failing that cut the cable close to the connectors with insulated wire snips then tape each of next doors cables up individually, they have 3 cables stapled to our wall. Roll all three wires into a roll and leave them at her side of the house. Does this sound like a good plan?

There are various types of LNB commonly used and some do indeed have a cover that slides down to protect the cable connectors after fitting:

It would be better if you could unscrew the F type connectors possibly with pliers but if they don't remove the cables by your new deadline then you should do what you need to do to satisfy your sale and cut them if necessary.
  • Yes, that is more like the one we have. There are quite a few cables going into it but if we unfasten the 3 cables coming over our porch from next door first, then we can easily tell which ones to remove and which are actually ours.

Think I have it worked out now thanks to all your help.
  • If you cut the cables and your neighbour(s) have there sky box(s) powered up, the shorting of the inner and outer of each cable, could damage the sky box(s).
  • Oh, flipping Norah, I thought that the consensus was that we would be OK if as a last resort we needed to cut the cables, roviding we made sure that the cables didn't touch each other then we would be OK. Now you are saying that we might blow their sky box!!! This is soooo not what I want to happen so let's just hope and pray that if we do have to do it ourselves then we can unscrew things.

I'm having sleepless nights worrying about this sale going through ASAP and without further hassle.

Unlikely these days, they're well protected now.
They tend to just shut down now.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

... She relayed it to our buyers solicitor and the reply was that they want this wiring removed before completion. ...

Nice way to start a good relationship with your new neighbours...
