Good morning :)today am doing something I always dread ...packing the suitcase and weighing it realising you are overweight ;)so sure I will be having to eliminate certain uneccasary items at the last call ;) and doing away with the many lists that have accumulated on the dining table as things have been checked off :TDS is taking us to the Airport and picking us up on our return journey so no need to panic about Taxi's

    Catch-up later this evening

Yes, you'll have to pay excessive charges if you go a couple of KG over....but that person next to you weighing 50 more than he should, he won't be charged extra...
  • Meant to mention yesterday, do not be too concerned about the upcoming cold snap. Saw two pigeons doing what comes naturally on top of our grape vine arch yesterday

you are an absolute star :j

I've forwarded it onto him and I've saved it in my own reference section.
    Hello mhoc.

I'm afraid cheap and Iceland (the country not the local supermarket chain) do not go together. As an example I bought a bunch of 7 bananas from the local supermarket (Bonus) which cost the equivalent of £4.50  I paid 69p for 6 bananas in Tesco on Sunday that were the same size as the ones I bought in Iceland ...

    However, this guide is helpful:

    https://guidetoiceland.is/reykjavik-guide/top-10-best-value-places-to-eat-in-reykjavik

The Blue Lagoon has its own restaurant called Lava. So perhaps your son could book that for a birthday treat? The lagoon closes at 8pm in March, so this would be a possibility. It is also possible to have a massage and other treatments done at the Blue Lagoon.

    http://www.bluelagoon.com/blue-lagoon-spa/prices-and-packages/

It is definitely cheaper to book your tickets online. For example standard entry in the above link is EUR40 per person, however, on the day at the ticket office at the Blue Lagoon the price is EUR50, if there are even tickets available. If they book the standard package, tell them to take their own towels as the entry fee covers just that - entry only.

It is also recommended that they take sun block to use at the lagoon and sun glasses, even on the colder days, because people get wind burn from the wind blowing across the lagoon. The sun block will protect their faces.

You are given a wristband before gaining entrance to the changing rooms, which is also your locker key and “credit card” for any food or drink you would like to purchase throughout your visit. The wristbands are convenient because you don’t have to carry a key or money around with you, and everything is charged to your account at a swipe of your wrist. If you want to rent a towel or robe, you will get this before entering the locker rooms as well. Tip: if you book a massage or one of the entrance packages, the robe and towel are provided to you at no extra charge.

There is a drinks bar in the lagoon itself :D And although the talking guide found in the cave in the lagoon says that you can find the white silica mud in boxes around the lagoon, there is actually a hut in the lagoon near where the massages are done that you get the mud from. There is also a free to use sauna near the waterfall and massage area.

The water in the lagoon is salty and full of silica. Conditioner is therefore provided in the showers (which you must use before entering the lagoon and after getting out) and it is recommended that you apply conditioner to your hair before getting into the lagoon and after getting out because water gives your hair a wiry texture.

The changing rooms are also communal, so if your DS or his GF have body image issues, they would be advised to change into their swim wear before going to the lagoon.

It is useful to note that Iceland is on the same time zone as the UK, so there is no need to change the time on your watch.

For some reason there is a shortage of Icelandic Krona, so I recommend getting some earlier rather than later. We were almost having to buy ours at the airport

Alcohol is expensive in Iceland. You can only buy a small selection of lagers in the supermarkets. All other alcohol can only be bought from the state run wine shops called Vinbudin. The cheapest place to buy alcohol is the duty free shop at the airport. Therefore if your DS and his GF like an alcoholic drink, the best thing would be for them to buy a bottle or two before leaving Reykjavik airport. Likewise, if they wish to bring any of the local schnapps (called Black Death or Brennivin) back, they would be better off buying it at the airport before boarding.

Local delicacies are fermented shark meat, dried fish, lambs heads and rams testicles. We gave them all a very wide berth, but your DS and his GF may be more adventurous than we were.

In Reykjavik there is a church on the hill (Hallgrimskirkja) which is a local landmark. Near to it (diagonally across the road) is a small restaurant called Cafe Loki which sells local Icelandic food. It is possible to go up the church tower for 900 Krona per person to get an amazing view over Rekjavik.

Another popular spot is the Perlan (the Pearl), which are huge water storage containers for storing Reykjavik's hot water for use in their central heating systems etc. There is a revolving restaurant in the glass dome built on top of the containers.

We spent most of our days walking, so by the evenings we were happy to just sit down and relax. I can therefore not give any suggestions for evening things to do, other than the Northern Lights of course, but March is not a good time for Northern Lights sightings. However, if they do decide to do a Northern Lights tour, then I would highly recommend Arctic Adventures. They take smaller groups of up to 12 people in the 4x4 super jeeps which can go off the beaten track, so have a better chance of taking you places where you are most likely to see the lights.

A worthwhile and highly recommended excursion is the golden circle tour. We choose the one which ends with a visit to the secret lagoon. You get to see the original geysir geothermal area, the tectonic plates of America and Eurasia in the Thingvellir national park, the Gullfoss waterfall, another waterfall that I forget the name of. It was amazing.

Also, it is cheaper to buy a daily ticket for the buses (there are no railways or trains in Iceland, so public transport is by bus only) which costs 1,000 Krona per person, than to pay per trip which costs 400 Krona per person per trip. We bought ours from our hotel reception.

Here is a blog I read about things to do in Iceland before we decided on our own excursions:

    http://globalhelpswap.com/things-to-do-in-iceland/

    and a little video

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt3QjDHpbUQ&authuser=0

If they are flying with Icelandair, it is possible now already to choose their seats, at no extra charge, for both the outgoing and inbound flights. Rows 7 and 8 are both economy class, but have extra leg room and are not exit rows.

They can also reclaim the tax on goods that they pay more then 6,000 Krona (about £35) for in one transaction. Tax is 24% in Iceland. This is done at the airport. It is recommended that they reclaim the tax before handing in their luggage as sometimes the people at the tax desk want to see the goods as well as the tax receipts. Ask at the shop for a tax reclaim receipt when paying for your goods.

    Better stop now ....

    Interesting.
So you'd welcome some sort of ticket price based upon the combined weight of body + luggage? Sounds reasonable, but I'm a little confused by a man putting forward what is essentially a practice unfair on men.
Generally speaking, men are bigger and therefore heavier than women. Is this fair?
As a 5'4" parent of 6'4" sons, I don't think it's unfair for us to pay the same for a ticket. We all take up one seat each. My sons have no control over their height and frame size and it's not like there's much leg room either.

    It's only a game

Sky is absolute sh** , I get speeds ranging from 16mbps to 0.05mbps. It constantly drops out between 12am and 2am so usually in the middle of films or while i'm on the Xbox/PS4.

When we paid £93 a month it was fine but ever since we got the deal for £5.95 for the year it's been c@ck.

In theory if BT open zone they have to put in new wiring this week then our speed should improve, unless they bodge the job and just attach new stuff to old.

if not then our contract is up in April I think - we seem to have a weird 10 month contract so I will see what the alternatives are

I think what he is saying is that people should pay more if they are obese. Difficult to operate but not that unreasonable.

They should put a new cable in from exchange to connection box, but in practice that would be very difficult as they do not futureproof installations. Anyone else would install conduit under the ground to make it easier to replace cables when they age. BT do not install conduit so it makes it harder to replace the cable, They would not have to dig up the street if conduit was in place.

Connecting new to old will not affect the outcome so long as they determine where the fault is first.
