You sign up to the collective before the auction but at that time the winners and tariffs are not known. After the auction the tariffs are then announced and you can choose one or not as you wish. If E.On are one of those tariffs the new rules now appear to allow them to inform their customers.

At least that's how I see it. I could be wrong.

You may be able to sign up after the auction, but I don't know that for sure.

If you sign up for the MSE Cheap Energy Club you are informed of and eligible for all future MSE collectives.

Sorry chas1999, missed this bit. Just to be clear, we can only tell customers about collective tariffs through the 'Could You Pay Less?' message on bills/statements, annual summaries or renewals. There's not been any other changes to the rules. We're still not allowed to sell, promote or market them. This includes through mailings, adverts, phone calls, social media etc. They don't appear on our website either.

    Hope this explains.

    Perhaps I've misunderstood collectives then.

Taking MSE collective as an example, I thought you either had to be a member of the Cheap Energy Club or on the MSE email list to be able to take up a winning tariff during the period after the auction ends and before the offer ends.

I'm now getting the impression that once the tariff becomes available, anyone can take up that tariff if they want to. Is that correct?

Sorry if I'm being a bit dense on this.

I was just imagining people (who may know nothing about collectives) being informed via the 'Could You Pay Less' message of some great new collective tariff that is available. Then they're disappointed to discover it was only available to them, if they'd known beforehand to sign up to whatever organisation was behind the collective. Obviously, if the tariff is available to anyone, that disappointment won't occur.

    Hi onzey

Individual collectives differ. The rules behind them are set by the organisation negotiating with the energy supplier. What we need to do is make sure that we include the availability of a collective tariff we're involved with in the 'Could You Pay Less?' message we put on bills/statements, annual summaries and renewals. That's if the tariff in question will save a customer money and provided it's available for sale at the time the relevant document goes out. At this time, the tariff will be available through the third party. This should help stop disappointment.

Hope this makes our role in this a bit clearer onzey. For more information about the terms behind each individual collective, you'll need to ask the organisation behind them. As ever, though, let me know if I can tell you anything else about how we handle collective tariffs.

Thanks for posting this link Stompa. The open letter forms the basis of the way we include details of collective tariffs we're involved with in the 'Could You Pay Less?' message we give to customers.

So would, or could, a 'Could You Pay Less' message say something like this, on a statement dated, lets say today, 25/02/2016 :

"There is an Onzey collective tariff available which will save you money. It is the best tariff we have ever been involved in, even beating our Sliced Bread tariff. :)

The tariff is available from 20/02/16 until 05/03/16. The rules of this collective state you must have pre-registered with the Onzey organisation by 17/02/16 to be eligible to take up this tariff.

If you did successfully pre-register you can apply for this tariff by contacting the Onzey organisation by phone or via their website.

However, if you did not successfully pre-register with the Onzey organisation please ignore this message because the tariff is unavailable to you."

There isn't a one size fits all message. They're based on a customer's individual circumstances and tailored to suit these. If I might explain.

The 'Could You Pay Less?' message is a brief note based on a customer's personal projections. It takes into account everything we know at the time. At this point, if we think a customer can save money by making changes, we'll let them know. This includes switching tariff, changing the payment method, opting for paperless billing and going from single rate to Economy 7 or vice versa.

We'll also let them know if a more substantial change would help. This might include a meter change. For example, a customer with a prepayment meter would see the message 'based on your current choices, you are already on our cheapest tariff - E.ON Energy Plan.' The message then goes on to say 'you could save £xx by switching to E.ON Fixed 1 Year with a Monthly Direct Debit.' Underneath this, though, would be a note saying 'we would need to change your prepayment meter to a credit meter (subject to a credit check).

Collectives are only available through third parties. As such and like the prepayment example above where something extra is needed, there'll be a note directing customers to the organiser to find out more information. Messages won't have the sort of detailed information you mention. They'll act as a prompt to make customers aware of possible alternatives. Not all will want to change but, if it's of interest, they can follow this up.

    Hope this explains onzey.

I think I read somewhere that these Price Alerts are sent out in batches and can take up to 10 days for all customers to be notified!

Just out of interest why can't this be sent instantly to all your customers once a new tariff is released. It's a simple email sent to a mailing list. It's not rocket science in this day and age?

That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Just because there will be no new versions of a collective, I would still like to be made aware of other new tariffs!

Why not just have a system of Price Alerts (preferably to be received well within 10 working days) that tells any customer who is signed up to it of any new tariff that becomes available in case it is of interest?

Is it me or am I missing something here?

Yes I am now on EHL collective wef 15Feb .This was changed on19Feb and backdated to when I applied.

No idea how I got my alert, must have been generated by them whilst in the process of updating my account😀

Mind having said that the e-mail telling me about my new tarif includes the message that I will get alerts⚠️

    Morning all.

As promised earlier in this thread, just a quick update with progress on some of the issues I raised around Price Alerts following feedback from MSE users.

There's a fix going in to make it clearer that customers on collective tariffs won't receive Price Alerts. This will be on the Current Plan and Tariff Information Label pages once logged in to our website. We're not able to do this next month as originally requested due to other planned website changes. We're now looking to do this in May. I'll confirm once live.

I've had to escalate to a higher level the concerns about sending alerts quicker and also including customers on collective tariffs. I posted a similar update on a separate thread yesterday. It's at the following link.

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/70066566#Comment_70066566

I'll update both threads again once I've more information. Thanks all for the feedback. It's really helped me with this.

PS/ Sorry if I've missed anyone.
