I've just had a damp survey which has advised that the rendering be replaced due to the massive damp problem in my home. Bad news indeed - I'm waiting on more quotes but the first couple have come back in the region of £15,000.
Does anyone have any knowledge of grants that may be available? I've researched myself but can't find anything. I suspect that we won't qualify but, its worth a try...
Our circumstances are:
- Live in North Wales
- Married couple, baby under one year
- I'm full time employed, currently on maternity leave
- My husband is working as a supply teacher, currently looking for full time employment
- Not in receipt of any benefits
- Home mortgaged (scope to borrow against it)
I have heard of a grant for people who live within two miles of the sea to have houses re-rendered?? We do, but I can't find any evidence of it existing anywhere.
Thanks in advance!!
What do you know about the structure of your walls ?
How old is the house ?
Have you got filled cavities in the wall ?
What sort of house is it? detached/semi/terrace......
A picture is worth a thousand words, it need not be your house, it could be someone else's; they are unlikely to recognise their own home unless it is very distinctive or includes a chunk of garden.
As as "newbie" you will need to spell out the link to the photo - if your posting makes sense, I could re-post it for you.
Here is an example of rendering.
Remember the movement of moisture and vapour in walls is not rocket science - it is much more complex.
You or your adviser first fully understand why your walls are wet and when and how it happened.0 -
Long story short we got a leek in the high winds, insurance won't cover as roof in too bad condition. 3 roofers said can't replace tiles as going on roof other tiles would break due yo condition etc.
New roof is like 6-8k, we don't have that, is there any financial help we can get or are we just royalt screwed?0 -
What sort of roof is it? Take a photo and post it here.
[How to do that is fairly well explained on here if you look for it]l
At the moment I am visualising plain tiles, probably of clay and about 100 years old.
Presumably you are talking tiles not slates ?
It really is worth understanding the geometry of your roof and and the nature of its covering plus how that covering has been attached to the common rafters underneath.
Can you get to the physical underside of the tiles? If so you might be able to slide a cord out of the "hole" and then pull up a replacement tile from the garden. This works best with Victorian slates which can be jammed back in position by using polyurethane waterproof wood glue to attach a block of foam to the underside of the slate.
Back in the hurricane of '87, I lost a ridge tile and a couple of plain clay English tile off a roof on a house like this:.
Yes up there above the flat dormer window.
The second hand tiles cost about £10 and the mortar needed for the ridge probably £1.
However not for nothing are there rules about employees working at height, so consider getting a harness and clipping yourself to the roof, as you remove tiles to make foot and hand holds to climb and then descent the slope of the roof.
There is not much point in saving the money to pay for your funeral.
John.
PS A new roof can in theory mean the need to get building regulations approval, which can include the requirement to vring thay roof up to current vuilding regulation standards of insulation.uicy0 -
I am a disabled, married man - looking for financial assistance to get a new bathroom / wetroom installed.
Does, whether you get a DFG depend on how much savings you have ?0 -
I completed an online form last week for free boiler installation with EDF. They phoned me yesterday, a surveyor attended today and the boiler is booked to be fitted on the 10th July. Fantastic service could not fault it. So easy.0

We have an ancient ideal w2000 boiler that must be 20 years old if not more. I work but on a low income, but dont claim any benefits. Our heating is either on or off and we only have hot water when its on. Are there any grants to help us replace it or any schemes to have it done and repay through our bills. We have a bad credit history so no chance of getting a loan0

As above, my grandparents had to change three windows to double glazing as they were losing too much heat from them. The price was astronomical and is what prevented them from doing the rest of the house. Is there anything to help them with windows?0 -
are there any grants available to help me buy a gas fire.i have no fire in my living room at present and my central heating system is very old.i am currently in the process of claiming jsa0

Grants for cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, draft proofing, boiler ... but nowt here on grants for insulating dormer walls
Anyone know of anything out there on that front???
The upper dormer rooms are uninsulated panels front and back. Unbelievable, but there you go. 1965 in the South West was more "cowboy" I guess :A
The quote to get the job done is £3,0000
