Recommend me a pressure cooker

Prestige is the market leader in the UK. Spares i.e. the gaskets are readily available everywhere. I have a Tower pressure cooker and whilst some spares are available via online merchants I have found thats its now easier to order spares via the phone and Salton (parent company) customer services. You will find other brands in Argus and elsewhere (Lidl, Aldi) but I've no idea what they are like for spares.
Eitherway if you like your stews, curries, chillis, soups etc cooked in less than 15mins then a pressure cooker is for you.0 -
I have a steamer which I use for veg but as I cook it from frozen it takes about 40 minutes to cook.
I have been looking at pressure cookers in Argos and was wondering if they are worth buying?
We have a halogen hob so it would probably have to be one of the Prestige ones.
I have a budget of about £40 so it would only be one of the lower range models.
I know that my mum had one when I was a child and it used to scare me to death, I was always expecting the weight to fly off!
I haven't got a clue how they work or what the trivet is you get with it but the idea that you can cook your veg perfectly within 10 mins or so appeals to me.0 -
I've just read that they are the new in thing for saving money. It doesn't really appeal to me. Like you I remember my mother using one and the steam everywhere.
I suppose it's the exact opposite of the slow cooker.0 -
The modern ones are not as scary, honestly. Was given one 33 years ago and never looked back. Use it for making soup in vast quantities to freeze and every day for things like veg, also does stewing beef and brisket ( pot roast ) very nicely as veg cooks in same pan therefore less washing up! I think they are better than a slow cooker.0

Wouldn`t be without my pressure cooker. Use it nearly every day as it cooks everything so quickly and keeps the flavour in. Especially good for soups, as pulses( ie.lentils, broth mix etc ) cook so much faster without having to pre soak. Veg takes hardly any time at all. I bought a steamer over a year ago and have only used it once - not very moneysaving !!Fully paid up member of S.A.B.L.E.

I think I may take the plunge and buy one this week.
There are two Prestige ones in Argos that are suitable for a halogen hob can anyone suggest which would be the best one to buy, there are 3 of us.
I think the 6ltr one is smaller in diameter so not sure if that would be suitable for cooking a whole chicken unless I stood the chick up on its bum!.

Mine is the top one (Low Dome) BUT I thought I was buying the bottom one(Hi-Dome)! Would prefer them if the little internal pans were a bit deeper like they used to be.
Wouldn't be without it at all. Between the SC, Microwave and Pressure Cooker - life's a doddle. All I need is the big George Foreman Grill that I'm after and I'll be a happy Ollie
. You DO need to be careful about timing veg cooked in them - so easy to overcook veg in a pressure cooker.

So, if you were buying it again would you go for the taller one?
It does say high dome in the write up on the smaller one so it may be a bit misleading.0 -
I have the tall one as I didn`t think the other one would be big enough. Never had a problem with it, can make enough soup for two days easily. Great when you don`t have a lot of time.
They are both high dome (as against flat lids) but the actual pan of the taller one is deeper so holds more.Fully paid up member of S.A.B.L.E.

aaaahhhhh that's why I got it by mistake then !
Would definitely go for the taller one.
I used to sterilise DS1's bottles in mine (1973/4) but they were pyrex bottles back then- not sure if today's bottles would be ok in them! Though we do have steam/microwave sterilisers nowadays, so perhaps they would still be OK.
