So you've got a Heat Interface Unit. You haven't got a boiler at all.

    This thread is a joke.

    Combi boiler perhaps?

I'm sure OP would know whether they have a boiler or not. Given they've had so many engineers out, they've likely heard the word dozens of times.

OP take a breath and step back. You're irritable right now because of the stress and its put you on the defensive. No one is attacking you, they're just trying to understand the details involved - although admittedly perhaps they should wait for the answer before declaring the thread a joke.

I would be more concerned to raise with the HA why they are charging 7.5p per kWh for gas that costs about 4p per kWh. My understanding is that if you have a private meter, they cannot resell at a profit, so why are they paying and charging so much?
If your bill was £250 in September (summer usage) then £400 in the winter is on the low side.
Since there is confusion about what system you actually have, please tell us what units you are actually being billed for-kWh's or something else?
And how do you presume to know the gender of all those have replied in an attempt to help you with this issue?

Thank you for your understanding. Its a big unit that's in one of my cupboards, its not a little digital thermostat stuck to the wall. Its a big old unit that they have to take the face off and change valves and pipes and whatnot else. They call it the boiler, I call it the boiler, although they have also referred to it as a HIU.

There is one big communal boiler which the HA buys bulk gas, the gas is then supplied to ur individual apartments from that boiler into our boiler, but we all have boiler units and thermostats. My issue is not with the thermostat its with the boiler unit.

Thanks, I will raise this with the Ombudsman also when they get round to my case as I do not think its fair, you cant even move supplier. They have just raised the standing charge from 20p per day to 25p per day. When I questioned it she said well we are still cheaper then britsh gas ....

If there is a communal boiler then you would not have individual boilers in each apartment. I repeat, please get your bill out and tell us what units you are billed in.
Does the boiler or HIU have a make and model shown on it?

The hot water can be used regardless if this switch is on or off though. Would the gas boiler still be using units to heat the water even though I am not home and have the taps on? Still takes a while to heat up the water though, its not constantly hot as soon as you open the tap.
Yes, some boilers will have settings to pre-heat hot water so will use an amount of gas even if you're not using the hot water taps.

A HIU is not a boiler. You need to ascertain what you actually have. Post a picture if you're not sure.

The problem here is nothing to do with you being a woman - I am female and also think that, on the information given, the amount you are claiming is nonsensical. The problem is that your understanding of your system is flawed, either that or you are very bad at explaining it.

If your winter quarter bill is £400, then, with an s/c of 25p per day and a kWh rate of 7.5p, you have used approx 5,033kWh in 90 days . That is not at all excessive for a winter quarter for hot water and heating (when it's working)-and possibly you cook on gas as well?
However, if you have an HIU, then there is no gas supply to your flat, and so no gas meter. The 'gas meter' will be some sort of way of metering hot water usage.
That's why we need to get the info about how you are actually being billed, when you are able to post it.
