Last time I had to get through a faulty one of these where one of the numbers in the code was not working I eased it open using a screwdriver between door and jam.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

If any of the buttons look dirty/worn, then you may be able to guess the combination. As Alter ego says, the C is the clear button, so if you get it wrong, hit C and try again. With these locks, it doesn't matter which order you press the buttons, so 1234Z is the same as 4321Z.

The coat hanger trick may work if it's just a latch and doesn't deadlock.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Many thanks.

I will try C4679Z tonight Kiran. You get a prize if you're right.

I didn't realise that the order wasn't important. That reduces the number of combinations significantly. Are they always just 4 digits and a letter (plus C at start)?

There's no space to get a coathanger in there. I've tried that already.

If all else fails I'll take an angle grinder to the hinges.

No, it can be any number of digits - from 1 upwards.

My money's on 123X (judging by the sweaty fingerprints by the buttons).

No, and the letters are just additional characters, just think of them as 11 buttons.

But I would start off with all the 4-character codes (not forgetting to press C between each try). People are so used to four characters for PINs, that's what's most likely and you should whizz through those in well under an hour.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to try four numbers and a letter (the same reasoning as above, really, with a letter added to a PIN).

After that, you just have to be methodical and go through all the possible codes, from 1 to 11 characters. Good luck!

Could you knock the pins out of the hinges?

I would also go with this first. Should knock out quite easy in most cases
