Simply opt for the Visa Debit card in order that it can be used online/in shops.

Get your youngster to investigate what would suit them best. Reserve your final veto.
  • Can I ask why a parent would WANT to let a 15 year to use a card online?

They should not be able to enter into any contract until the age of majority.

Will you know what they will be purchasing?

The minimum [STRIKE]w[/STRIKE]age for iTunes is 13. I am sure there are other examples. I don't see why a 15 year old should only be allowed to buys stuff in bricks and mortar shops.

Debit cards are available for even younger folk.
  • My two have Natwest accounts which come with their own Visa debit cards. One has had theirs since sixteen and the other since being twelve.
Not had any problems, touch wood. I find it reassuring that if they needed money urgently then I can just transfer from my account to theirs and they can withdraw from cash point.
    Hope this helps.

My kids have had bank accounts with Visa debit cards since age 11. I think it's good thing they can learn to use them responsibly. How does it matter whether they are buying online or in the high street? They regularly go to Tescos for me to do shopping and pay with their card.

@Janapp, my kids accounts are with Natwest but Nationwide probably have a better offering now
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • Sorry if you find this naive of me but they are old enough to earn money so therefore old enough to spend it surely?

Get them used to using them responsibly, before a time where they can rack up debt on one?

You realise that buying a mars bar in the local newsagent is technically "entering into a contract"?
Will you know what they will be purchasing?
Probably more so than if they buy stuff in a shop, because everything has to turn up at your doorstep... while they're at school.

    Totally agree with this.

As an addition to this post, get them to go through a list of things that each account might offer them, and get them to mark each out of 10 on how essential it is to them. Things like...
    • Gives them a debit card
    • Has a local branch for paying in (or arrangement with post office)
    • Gives them a crap one-off freebie for opening it
    • In-credit interest
    • Online banking
    • Telephone banking
    • Banking app for their phone
