The Steel closures in the UK started in October last year and you thought it was a good time to buy a new car? Beggars belief.
+1
If i was working for an organisation that was making redundancies i would not be spunking £40K on a new car until i saw how the land lay when the dust had settled.0 -

There was a time that this forum offered friendly advice. I've had the answer to the question I posted, thank you all.
I certainly do not want to be flamed by you !
The banks went through turmoil, not every bank in the UK shut down did it? We, at the time, were not expecting this as Port Talbot was the strongest and safest plant in the UK.0 -
Why don't you just explain your situation and politely ask if they can reduce the bill, if not pay up and accept it or sell the car to them.0

you are liable0

I think you've got off light.
Yes there's a £750 bill that you can't afford.
Yes you'd have driven it round, scratches/bumps and all.
Yes it didn't need another service, but a new buyer would have expected/demanded one.
BUT ... you entered into a very lucrative (for them) contract and have now "just pulled out". They COULD have got VERY 4rsey with you and forced you to continue to the point where it bankrupted you 1-2 years down the line.
Just take it on the chin and realise that, actually, in the big bad world of rip off merchants and general t0ssers they've actually done all right by you.0 -

Until it happens to YOU, it's all just stuff that happens to other people.
Only people that've been laid off can see the other side of the coin and realise they're not immune.
It's why we cross the street - other people get run over, not us.0 -

That's totally wrong. There is no legal way that they could have forced the OP to continue with the contract if they wished to pull out.
The garage could pursue the OP for their provable losses but unless they were never able to sell the new car to another customer or cancel the delivery before it came off the production line, I doubt very much if their losses would be enough to cause bankruptcy especially as the OP has a car valued at around £18K or more, something that could be sold if they were required to compensate the garage.0 -

Granted, I think I was just over-egging the "it won't end prettily" really. Apologies.
Not to mention the angst he'd go through at a time when life'd already be crashing round his ears.
Sad times

andru,
I think that your best option would be to contact the dealer and explain that you are more than willing to pay for the work carried out to the car but am unable to do so in one lump sum and see if they can reduce the total amount or if this isn't possible, ask if you can pay it off over a few months.
I know that it's a bill of £750 that you weren't expecting but as stated by others, the paint repairs if done to a professional standard will probably have increased the value of the car enough so that you will get this back should you sell it in the not too distant future.0 -
Remember, for every bad business out there, there are thousands of moaning chancers like the op.
I hope one day he has a business of his own to run and customers treat him as pathetically as he's been with the dealer0
