At last......the English asparagus has arrived at Aldi. Late this year, but well priced at less than £6 per kilo. Less than half the price of the Waitrose equivalent too.
Ooh good! The imported stuff is OK but I'll enjoy the English. I must add it to my meal plan for next week.:)

I just don't get the attraction of asparagus over any other green veg. What am I missing? If anything it makes your wee smell odd.

It does that - certainly. But English asparagus is on its own amongst vegetables at this time of the year. Has to be English though, or British. Nothing else has the delicate flavour.

Lightly cooked, with butter - nothing to touch it.

On a par with the first English strawberries or early new potatoes from Lincolnshire or Norfolk (not those awful Jersey Royals, which have no flavour these days).

    Poundland is cheaper, by 16p, Aldi's 6 pack is £1.29, so 4 x £1.29 = £5.16.
However, Aldi's is really nice, no idea of the £land quality.

Aldi also do a 500ml can of energy drink for 49p. I had the diet version on Saturday and it was hard to tell the difference with expensive brands.

The Poundland brand us called Emerge. It's also sold in the Co-op and is identical to Red Bull.

Unless those strawberries are Elsanta - the worst strawberry variety ever.

Agreed about Jersey Royals. It is a disgrace what has happened to those, courtesy of intensive growing methods. The best English new potatoes I've found haven't been from Lincs or Norfolk, though, they've been the earliest ones from Cornwall.

Sadly, my local Aldi today had the usual miserable looking selection of fruit and veg - almost as bad as the museum of dead and dying plants on the trolleys outside. Much as I like Aldi, I find it so disappointing that they can't get things like that right. What is it about Aldi and the vegetable kingdom?

Maybe it's just your store. I've never had a problem buying fresh vegetables and fruit at two of the Aldi stores I visit. Most of what I buy will last several days if not weeks in my refrigerator.

I can smell it within 15 minutes of eating it. I live alone so not smelling others.

Don't buy it now as I hate the smell

It's not just one store - I've used several. It's possible it's a regional thing but I'm not the first to have complained about Aldi's fruit and vegetables.

I think it's down to local store management to an extent.

If they happen to have someone who knows plants then they can be well cared for.

Same with the fruit and veg. Those with properly trained staff do rotate stock, in others I've seen them just tip a new box on top of the old and throw stock around quite roughly. generally they get away poor rotation as turnover is high.

Also, I'm not sure if suppliers are the same all over the country. lately we've had some pretty awful cauliflowers and I've been forced into Sainsbury's!
