Internet in ex's name

I think she needs to apply for maintenance formally through the Child Maintenance Service (https://www.gov.uk/child-maintenance/overview) as a first step. Tell the ex to stuff his internet contract and go with either Sky or one of the other providers - particularly if BT aren't playing ball.
The ex will soon get fed up of playing games when he's having money taken out of his salary before he sees it!0 -

Google "samknows" which is a great site for telling you what your exchange provides.
Depends what the service is - the cabinet, rather than the exchange. We have FTTP and this can only go through BT or Plusnet in our area. Otherwise it's snail service from Sky/Virgin etc., and by snail I mean <1mb.0 -
Wherever do you get that idea from?
Complete and absolute nonsense. BT may have had the monopoly on new line installations in the last century but it certainly isn't true today.
It was certainly true about 2 years ago. I know because we had to use them to get connected up to a landline in our newbuild flat.
We didn't use them for internet, just for connecting up. £130 it cost :mad:left the forum due to trolling/other nonsense

Surely any non-LLU can provide service on any openreach fibre cabinet, ie not just BT or Plusnet.
I use AAISP and as they are not a LLU operator it means they can provide service on any BT line. I'm sure other smaller ISPs such as Zen are also non-LLU.0 -
The OP also needs to consider her e-mail address. If the family are using @bt ones then they will lose them if they move to another provider and might have to be ported to a new account if they stay with BT.0

Good reason people should never use an email address that is tied to their ISP - there are so many free providers like gmail, hotmail, yahoo etc that I'm amazed why anyone would ever want to use one locked to a single ISP.0 -

It's taken several years, a vocal group of locals, the council, 2 MPs ....... and BT, to get fibre installed here. Believe me we can only go through those 2 companies. Some of the new build estates in the area are also stuck with the same options for provider if they want fast broadband as deals were struck and hefty grants from the council were involved to get "super fast". I signed on early because I knew it had been installed - those trying to have it installed in my area now are being blocked as it doesn't look like there is enough capacity for it to be available to all. We're back in discussion mode with Openreach ..... again.0 -

That may be so, but a lot of people do opt to use them. Worth pointing out in case the OP is one of them.0 -
OP if either mother or daughter have a smartphone - most of these have the ability to mobile hotspot (create a wifi access point). You can also tether with certain networks (some networks have restrictions on this though) if its a laptop/desktop via the usb cable that comes with the phone.
May be a cheaper/better solution for the short term than buying a dongle.
Baffled by the ex's logic of deducting 2 lots of money though if the friend went and got a contract in her own name - surely she'd be paying it herself so why would he deduct anything? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
