Internet in ex's name

Just wondering what my friend can do.

She is currently married but kicked her husband out before Christmas.
They have a child together and he is being funny with her over maintenance and childcare costs.

The issue currently and the reason for this topic is to do with the internet. When they were together they had the internet set in his name with BT. Since he left, she agreed to take the money out of what childcare costs he agreed to give her to cover the cost of the internet.

The problem with that is that the internet got cut off and he still deducted the money out of what he paid her. This was last month, and so for about a week afterwards he kept telling he he was sorting it and didn't know what was going on.. He then told her it was getting cancelled and all different story's. When she told him to forget about it she'll take one out in her name he then changed the story that it wasn't cancelled and if she did that he would deduct 2 contracts out of what he pays her.

This ended up becoming a massive stress because her daughter needs the internet for her school work, and he agreed he would cancel it and she could take out one in her name.
She then proceeded to open a contract in her name just before Christmas, and BT told her it would be activated on the 11th on this month and they would have to send her a new hub out. She has just looked today and the contract she opened has been cancelled. She's tried ringing today twice, for both times to be cut off after the operator stating that there is already a contract open in her husbands name.

She feels helpless in that it's her home and he is messing with it and restricting her from getting the internet, with BT being funny because the previous contract isn't in her name and she cannot find out if it is still open or not.

Is there anything she can do to amend this situation?

Many thanks,
Jonathan

She should take her matter up with the child maintenance service/chld support agency.

  • Thankyou for the advice. The post was more to do in regards with what she do about the current situation of him having a hold on the Internet services in the home whilst not living there

He should cancel it and she should take it out in her own name. Or maybe try another provider if BT won't co-operate with her?

If she orders talk and BB in her name with a new provider asking them to takeover the existing service then he doesn't need to be asked to cancel anything and the new acc can be in her name.

It's a bit of a loophole but it will work so long as she just orders it that way and doesn't go into any explanations of the situation. He could cancel the move of provider but would have to know about it to do so.

As for him making deductions from child support....if she puts in a proper claim for child support rather than deal direct with him he won't be able to do that.

It sounds like he is deliberately messing her about, telling different stories about what's happened to the net connection, and he's been ringing BT and telling them who knows what. He's probably annoyed at having been kicked out!

Meanwhile the daughter will just have to use the internet in the library. Make the most of it, at least she's not on FaceBook or Instagram till 2am!

If she desperately needs the net at home, maybe a dongle? Can you still even get these? Sorry, I'm not very techy!

Does she have Sky tv? she could add the internet to that. and let him sort out HIS contract with BT.
  • She lives in a new build where she can only really get BT. She has Sky TV yes, but is recently in the process of cancelling it. I will forward the information on to her about switching provider to sky if she can. Thanks for the help
  • Highly unlikely that they can only get BT regardless if its a new build or not. What matters is the equipment in the local exchange.
Google "samknows" which is a great site for telling you what your exchange provides.

BT have a monopoly on new landlines, but once you've got the landline connected up you should be able to choose whichever provider you want.

Wherever do you get that idea from?
Complete and absolute nonsense. BT may have had the monopoly on new line installations in the last century but it certainly isn't true today.

OP she doesn't need to have Sky tv to have talk and broadband with them.
