I agree 100% with this. I've said it before, so apologies if this is boring now. There needs to be a mechanism for EU countries that are the second speed in a "two-speed Europe", largely us Sweden and Denmark. The most logical way is to link up with Switzerland, Liechstenstein, Iceland and Norway through the EEA/EFTA (assuming that Sweden and Denmark decide to follow us out, they'll watch to see what the impact is first).

The reality is that the EU has blown hot and cold on this and has never really had a great plan for the exceptions. Rather, it tries to shoehorn all countries into a one size fits all model, something like the ugly sisters into Cinderella's glass slipper.

You mean like the UK used to be with its 'Opt out' of political and economic union :)

Do you really think the UK could continue as it was?

With tolerance of other races, cultures and religions; with freedom of movement of goods, services, capital and people; with membership of a trading block that has global clout; with sterling being relatively strong; with GDP recovering; and with unemployment dropping to lows not seen for decades?

Yes, something had to change and all of the above is now behind us,

So you would be happy for us not to be able to set our own tax rates?

    .

    Why would we allow that?

Have you ever noticed that Eurosceptics are only against democratic deficits relating to the EU, not the UK itself (eg monarchy, House of Lords)?

no, because it is not true
there are many eurospectics who wish to abolish the HoL and the monarchy, change the TPTP voting system, want more referendum etc
just as there are many remainers who support the monarchy are happy with TPTP

doubtless you have the figures for say those wanting to abolish the monarchy

This topic is still divided between Brexiteers and remainders with Brexiteers claiming Britain is on the edge of a boom and and a number of remainders claiming we are falling into a financial abys.
As a remainder but also a pragmatist I say we ALL need to hope it is the former or at least not the latter as this will only complicate our leaving negotiations and weaken our position when negotiating new trade deals with the EU and the rest of the world.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

So - what if things hadn't changed?

What if net migration was 500,000 next year? What if house prices continue to rise at 10% every year??? What about 20%??? What about when we can't set our taxes any more because the EU want to harmonize taxes??? What about when it's your kids who can't afford of house? What about when it's your pension/savings you have to hand over to your kids because you can't stand watching your grandchildren being brought up in a 1 bedroom flat?

What about all those hard working graduates who can't get a job because they have to compete with the unemployed of Italy, Spain and Portugal????

    What about all that?

    It's a simple numbers game.

There are more lower income people than middle/upper income types in this country, and for a variety of reasons they have voted for a change.

I think it's been coming for decades. This globalization process has created a society more divided, not less.

You only have to look across the pond to see the same disenfranchisement occurring in America.

I think Trump will run the election much closer than many would have predicted.

That would be great for the economy, great for those moving here, and great for those already here.

What if house prices continue to rise at 10% every year???

There are many areas where that isn't happening.
What about when it's your kids who can't afford of house?

My daughter recently bought a nice 3-bed semi for £125k and this in a popular area in a city centre.
What about all those hard working graduates who can't get a job because they have to compete with the unemployed of Italy, Spain and Portugal????

I recruit a lot of people from Spain and Greece because I can find well-educated people who are very happy with a graduate role starting on £30kpa. Sadly, I can't find enough UK grads who are good enough. We're now planning to reduce our UK workforce and open more EU offices. The UK loses the tax income and the GDP boost from local spending but that's not my problem.
    What about all that?

Much of it was what you'd call "growing pains" and we've certainly put a stop to them, but at the cost of moving from growth to recession, and from people wanting to live in the UK to people wanting out because of the loss of freedoms and the rise of racism.

'all that' is mostly fantasy and wrong
    • Long term unemployment (>52 weeks) in the UK is about 1%
    • Low skilled migration pushes the locals up the skill and pay scale not down
    • Net EU migration year end to 2015 was 184,000 not 500,000
    • High house prices do not impact 75% of households who either own or are in social homes. High house prices also mean higher taxes paid by the home owners so the foreigner buying a £10m house in kensington hands over close to £1.5 million in stamp duty
    • Housing build rates are a domestic issue the UK could build 400,000 units a year but chooses to build 150,000 a year
