Yeah thats right. Why don't we just perform genetic testing on people?

You know, to check they have the "British gene". Then everyone who doesn't have it can be deported on trains.

    I was thinking old barges

The average UK salary is £26,500.
There's some disparity between average house prices, between £200K to £280K depending on whether they're "mix adjusted" or whether the "extreme values" are treated as anomolies (e.g. a £50M 10 bed detached house in Kensington) but if you take the lower figure mentioned by Nationwide here: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/apr/01/average-uk-house-price-tops-pounds-200000 then it's at least 7.5 times. Take the median and you're around 9 times the average salary...
But the only long term figures for earnings to house prices published do not use the average of all employees but full time male. I agree compared to average earnings for all they are now 7.5, but to compare to the past the only figures we have are Halifax and Nationwide which are similar. These show for prices in relation to earnings are 50% more than the average and twice that of the lows which is bad enough in itself.

The assumption is that big multinationals will simply move out of the country but what evidence is there?

It's based the assumption that where a multinational's sales are larger in the EU ex UK than the UK, it will make commercial sense for them to relocate to the EU (especially if we leave the single market).

Some apparently have plans, e.g Vodafone, Easyjet.

No, he doesn't there, but that's what he was referring to when he stated 'out is out' back in June.

I think the message of the article was an implicit criticism of the Commision's dogmatic approach and an advocacy of pragmatism.

Officially we have an EU position of no discussion of terms, you issue Article 50 notification then we start talking.

I would be quite surprised if in practice this is happening. I imagine that the UK is probably discussing possibilities in some covert form. If they are not then it gives the impression that the EU wants Britain out without any attempt to have a close relationship.

More likely they are exploring whether whether they can agree the principles of a deal that involves the least disruption (single market access, modified Freedom of Movement) but which can be presented to Parliament as leaving the EU.

Did you get told off for calling me an i???t?
If you keep getting pulled up on posts you will end up not being able to post anymore.
    Wouldn't that be a shame.

Call me old fashioned but I believe in British houses and British Jobs should be for the British.
Anyone that threatens our livelyhood should be stopped.

To somebody who was intellectually challenged I can see that might be a problem but in the hands of someone with a better command of the language it would not be an issue.

You think the queues have gone? Remarkable!

  • I've got 55 properties currently on my Rightmove watch list, none of them have gone under offer since brexit, pre-brexit about 3-4 per week were going under offer.

I've also seen a marked increase in reductions, although by pretty modest amounts, maybe 5-8% off properties that are 20% overpriced.

I've also seen a marked decrease in new listings so it seems potential new sellers are holding off from coming to market.

This is my experience from this weekend, 2 very cheaply priced proper tie 325k sold on the same day, yet everything else which has been coming on at 400k (same spec/size etc) has not been selling and v slowly reduced in price. Just this evening i went to see a flat on at 380k and the agent mentioned he had only had 2 viewings since its been on (one week)….pre-April this would have been on at 340k and gone for 350-360k in days. The message of a downturn hasn't yet cottoned on to sellers and Imo EA's are more to blame for pricing things high to win the contract. My partner is an EA and they do this a lot.

This to me shows as mentioned above affordability is the most important thing (and confidence), demand does not simply keep on raising prices once they have reached the ceiling. Any smart seller would have sold early on in the year when BTL were very active and pushing prices to the max in commuter towns.

You know what? I think they should be allowed to stay whatever the EU bullies threaten - one of the things I think make the British culturally different is that we do the right thing because it is the right thing.

Perhaps as a compromise we could offer 5 years under their current status with the automatic right to naturalise if they wish to stay after that.

Of course they should be allowed to stay and of course we should announce it now as Government Policy. It is the right thing to do, at least for anyone here before we serve Article 50. The fact is that if they all returned home we would have to allow more immigration from outside the EU.

As Neil Kinnock once said "You cannot play politics with people's lives".

We really need to divorce working here from UK citizenship. I agree that 5 + years should enable someone to apply for UK citizenship but not that it should be automatic.
