The EU said the deals were certainly illegal.

I just wondered if Luxembourg were ever punished.

Just thinking about it. Those deals helped numerous multinationals pay all their taxable profits in Luxembourg, who secretly only asked for a very small % in tax, thus depriving the UK exchequer of what should have been rightfully paid to us. Maybe we should deduct that sum from the final Brexit Bill.

Thanks Rinoa, oh what was that threat from PM May "Britain could be the Singapore of of shore Europe"

Interesting discussion on TalkRadio claiming Juncker was the source of the leak and that individual heads of government aren't too impressed.

Many countries have a lot riding on a successful conclusion to Brexit and the discussion suggested Juncker hasn't done himself any favours. Negotiating power could now possibly shift to the council of ministers ie heads of member states.

Wishful thinking. I like Talk Radio and LBC a great deal. However their sphere of influence does not reach across the Channel.

If we did we'd do it openly and perfectly legally because we wouldn't be in the EU. We wouldn't steal our neighbours tax receipts as Luxembourg did. :)

And of course that's just an option open to us if the EU see fit to blackmail us on trade deals. It's not something we necessarily wish to do.

I don't imagine TalkRadio think they are influencing EU heads of state. But if you're PM of a country which relies heavily on exports to the UK a I can't imagine you'd be too happy with Juncker right now.

If it matters I live in Yorkshire.

Have to issue a correction there, the part in bold is not correct when you look at the impact on the individual member states. Particularly those who are net contributors to the EU budget, therefore those who are net beneficiaries are also subject to a decrease in wealth under WTO terms indirectly by a large risk presented to the net contributing economies within the EU.

Neither party holds sway over the other in my view. It's in our mutual interest (as nation states) to have as good a deal as possible, particularly with the net contributors to the EU budget. The institutions that stand in the way of such an agreement are those of the EU itself.

Hello Tricky, I have read your post a couple of time and want to reply in a sensible way. From the Heart.
You are perfectly correct that LOGICALLY a number of the 27 offered a BAD deal would LOGICALLY vote against a BAD deal.
However you have to understand that LOGIC is slowly (some say has already) flying out of the window.
You surely understand that the position of Brexiters over the last 10 months have hardened as has the position of remainders.
You should understand that any goodwill towards Britain within the 27 has ALSO slipped slowly away.
OK. With hindsight the best and least damaging route for Britain to leave the EU would have been to trigger A50 immediately after the referendum and get the job done quickly and efficiently in June 2016.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Sadly we are we we are. Further down the road of misunderstanding. Positions are hardening on both sides.
I hope that between now and the beginning of negotiations the heat will diminish in the argument. I suspect not.
Immediately after the referendum I was in panic (you know I am a Brit living in the EU) 10 months after I am relaxed about (my own) Brexit.
I know ONLY THIS, if I were an EU Citizen well educated and with TRANSFERABLE skills living and working in Britain I would be planning to leave.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

I do think that we are still just at the stage of posturing and sabre-rattling. Comes the time to get down to business, both sides will be keen to agree on the many things (and there ARE many) that will ensure a smooth Brexit and feasible deals. Whatever one may think of the EU negotiators and their UK counterparts, they are all far from stupid and not all gung-ho-whatever like so many Leavers and Remainers.

Perfectly correct, But Don't dismiss the hardening of the heart AGAINST Britain by the electorate of the 27.

You don't need to be Einstein to work that one out!
The British people voted for a dramatic change in the UK's politcal relationship with the rest of Europe. An obvious upshot of that will be a sizable drop in the amount oF EU citizens opting to live and work in the UK. Another consequence is a reported 30% drop in UK citizens looking to buy property in Spain.
Democracy changes things, you seem to be ingnorant of that fact or perhaps are in the midst of a bout of Remainiac denial.
    There`s a lot of it about. :)

I don't think you know how to fill out your profile.
As you CAN SEE if you look left, I live in Luxembourg. Where do you live?
