He based this £18 limit on an o2 tariff that has unlimited mins and 4gb data.

4gb data wouldn't last some people a week.

I do always buy my phones outright and have a £10 sim only with 1gb data. But thankfully I have access to wifi wherever I go. If I didn't I'd need at least 20gb of data (I have data man installed which shown both wifi and mobile data and I regularly use 20gb+ a month over wifi).

    I'm on 2 contracts.

    1) Unlimited calls and texts £5

    2) Grandfathered - 500 mins, unlimited data and texts £10

Trying to take contract 2 to unlimited mins is £30, two sims equal a 50% saving, 1 in a 2G handset, 2 in a phablet with hotspot tethering to my tablets.

    Sorted!

Not everyone has the cash to buy their own phone outright and a contract is the easiest way for them to get a decent phone.

Added to that, some people no longer bother having a landline so use their mobile for all calls & internet use.

Are they mad to pay over £20 per month?

    However....

i pay £15 a month on THREE i get 3000mins / unlimited txts & 2GB data and i wonder why i bother as i maybe send a dozen txts a month and probably 30mins of calls a month , data is about 30%

i really should look to switching to a lower tarrif as i am only on a 30day rolling just cant be arsed to ring up and speak to someone

Kernow666 is a bit mad and is exactly the type of person mobile providers love. :D

Incidentally, I'm not sure how many texts I use per month but I'm currently topping up £5 per month with 3 PAYG, so must be sending a fair few as thats my main usage. I don't always use up the free 150MB data my top up gets me as I tend to mainly use wifi. I'm not sure its really worth me even looking for a £5 or £7.50 per month sim only contract as its only very occasionally I need to top up more often than once a month. But there must be thousands of people like Kernow666 who have a contract and don't even use half of their allowance.

They are mad if the calls, texts and internet access component of the bill is more than £20 per month.

Fair enough if there's an extra £5 to £25 per month paying for the handset.

I've always thought that paying more than £20/month is madness.

Now Martin Lewis on his program on ITV tonight agrees.

So don't get sucked in by all the hype or what your mates say, just get a better deal, you can save money by buying your own phone and a payg sim, you just need to do a little bit of research.

I bet he has an iPhone. I wonder how much he pays.

Whatever it is, I bet it'll cost more than £480 over 24 months even if he did buy the phone outright.

£25 for a handset when a Windows Phone becomes a PC, bet they spend £1000+ on a Apple Macbook too

Further to my post above I forgot from Feb having completed my 12 month sim only Virgin Unlimited at £5 with 250MB of data I am getting 1GB, 2500 mins including 084 and 087 mins included (with no service charges :D) and 1GB with a £2 discount on the current standard £10 month to month sim fee ;)

£3 more for 750MB more and a minimum of 36p per minute service charges savings ;)

    BARGAIN!

Virgin says:Calls to 08 (incl. 0870 and 070) numbers not included in monthly allowance (other than those included in the unlimited 08 tariffs*) and cost up to 41p and £2.50 a minute respectively in the UK (see our tariffs for details). Pay Monthly service terms apply.

    http://store.virginmedia.com/virgin-media-mobile/pay-monthly/pay-monthly-call-charges.html#pay

Calls to service numbers: The way you’re charged for calling numbers beginning 084, 087, 118 and 09 has changed. The cost of calling these numbers will be formed of a combined access and service charge: we set the access charge and the company you’re phoning set the service charge. Your access charge for these numbers will be shown on your bill and is currently 36p per minute. The service charge will be advertised by the company that you are calling. If any of these numbers are included in your bundle you will not be charged the access or service charge.

    *£10+ plans

I'm paying £19.99 per month sim free for unlimited minutes and texts and 4Gb data...but with cashback that works out at just over £7 per month !
    That takes some beating

    Mobilephonesdirect? Hows cashback claims going?

I started same plan through them recently, waiting for 4th month to see how first claim goes.

When you call an 084 number, your telecoms provider, in this case Virgin, will pay out up to 7p per minute (up to £4.20 per hour) to the benefit of the called party and their telecoms provider. For 087 numbers your provider, Virgin, will pay out up to 13p per minute (up to £7.80 per hour).

If you were to make 2500 minutes of calls to 087 numbers with a 13p per minute Service Charge, Virgin will pay out £325 to be the benefit of the organisations that you called and their respective telecoms providers. Of that, around 9p per minute (£225 for 2500 minutes) is paid out as revenue share to the called party.

For numbers with a lower Service Charge the onwards payment and the eventual revenue share payout is less. Numbers with a Service Charge of more than 7p per minute or per call are classed as Controlled Premium Rate Services (CPRS) and subject to additional regulation by PhonepayPlus.

Your friends and relatives would be nuts to pass up the opportunity to get themselves an 087 number and get you to call that.

The reference to 41p per minute for calls to 0870 numbers does not apply after 1 July 2015. The new cost is the 36p per minute Access Charge plus the Service Charge between 1p and 7p per minute depending on which number was called.

Looks like someone has accidentally overlooked updating this wording.
