Thank you very much for people's responses to the issue :) just wanted to know if it was worth pursuing and I realise it isn't. I can always try again on grounds of goodwill. Cheers!

The company owe you no goodwill.

No harm in trying PCMcGarry. Goodwill gesture is discretionary

    Hi daytona0

I'm not sure you've understood my posts properly - I said Ok I see in an earlier response to someone and then spoke about the company doing it as a goodwill gesture for the information from the conductor and a simple mistake. In saying this I have indicated I have read and understood what posters have said.

Well the bottom line of my post was:

'Prove that the conductor said it'

Therein lies your answer to the goodwill gesture question too (they have company policy + Ts/Cs to fall back on). If the conductor admits to it then not only will he be in trouble but you may also get some goodwill. Aside from that you have nothing.
Yes I used "I" 34 times I'm sure in my first post (I'll take your word for it) - I have explained in a later post I thought it would seem odd if I came on here and said "a friend" as that's what most people say. I don't even live in Sheffield anymore - I went to University of Sheffield and still have friends there, I now live back home in Worcestershire. I can give proof of the county I live in on my driving licence/letters if you like

Well the driving licence/letters would prove nothing but it is irrelevant anyway! I'm just trying to explain why I believe that you'd be throwing good money after bad here.

The fact that I, a bit of a maths geek, gave you a kind 20% chance of winning should not encourage you because it is uneconomical to spend £35 to try and win £49.... BUT in terms of a goodwill gesture you probably have a similar chance so by all means try it.

P.S. your twitter handle, hayleyr16, says that you're still in Derbyshire

    What's a twitter handle?

If there's a way to prove my location to you I am more than happy to - you can let me know how I can on my phone - though obviously not exact location for stalkers online purposes.

Why would I make up such an elaborate story - if what you'really trying to suggest is it is actually really about me when I've explained it's not?? I'd have no embarrassment - we're all just random people online..

Goodwill might be an option had your friend not already blown it by apparently already threatening him with the small claims route.

I realise it's annoying - I lost £60 a month ago by accidentally booking some non-refundable theatre tickets for the wrong day. Sometimes you just need to realise you've been a plonker and let it go.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Just checked my twitter - yes location still set to Sheffield, however I did only leave there 6 months ago and only have 4 tweets, showing I don't use it much, nor update my details..

Yeah I know what you mean, just wanted to help out and could understand his frustration (at himself and also having his hopes put up then down). Oh well, guess he won't do it again!

I don't care! :o Don't mean that in a nasty way but I just don't care whether it was you or a friend...

Maybe I'm just saying that the excessive use of "I" in your original post does not compliment your comments regarding it being about a friend. Nobody really cares who it was about though!

As a sidenote - goodwill gesture is discretionary to the company, depending on who you speak to as it's not contractual. I had a situation just 2 days ago where an employee told me one thing on a decision and I rang a few days later and another employee said another - I'm sure many people have had this where they get different decisions just simply by asking different people.
