Do you have to have two wittnesses? I live with my single mother and she's the only person I could think about using as a witness as I've not spoken to my father in about 3 years and I'd rather not tell my friends about the name change?..

    One witness is acceptable.

I changed mine about 2 years,
got my passport a year later with no problems ,
just had to send my change of name and my orignal birth certificate, didnt take any longer than normal :)
Hello Sashyy and all ....i am currentlly using my mums maiden name on some of my documents which dont include [child benefit / anything work related / provisional licence / passport] but do use it on other important documentation.
However i have visted the solictors on many occasions and have been quoted between £65 / £ 95 which i think is hidious. The free site sounds really good .
However can someone help me as my name was changed by deed poll when i was 8yrs old when my mum was married for 4 yrs. - im now 30 yrs old and no chance of me getting married either , so dont want to wait any longer to officially change my name.
So as you mention Sashyy that you provided birth certificate - but mine is still in my original name ? so how do i go about that ?.. my daughter i have named with my original name so i am now in a major rush to get my passport in the same name as hers also my driving licence and bank account as i have constant problems when i have to provide identification as everything is half and half in different names? ... If anyone can help your help would be great ?

Try obtaining a new passport without a Deed Poll or Statutory Declaration. Won't happen.

I changed my name (with a solictor) after I divorced my first husband, I had to produce the offical documents a few times with things in the begining.

So you drafted a Deed Poll and the solicitor acted as your witness? That is perfectly acceptable.

The solictor drafted documents & I signed them.

Again, it's perfectly acceptable to have a solicitor draft a deed poll for you. But it is not necessary, you can easily do it yourself.

You do not need a solicitor. You just need a properly drafted deed. I am sure that a solicitor can help you with this but why waste your money? These links explain it clearly enough-

  • I've noticed that most of the so called 'free deed poll' services charge you money when you examine the small print. But I did find a site where I managed to download a name change form for free at mdpryke-notary.com. Hope this helps...
