I wanna change my name by deed poll!

Any tips or ideas? I can go through the official deed poll site, but it'll cost £70 for the whole family (we want to go back to my maiden name). There are scores of other sites offering name change services for a fraction of the price, but I'm not sure of the legality. Can anyone help?

There is no official deed poll site. I know there are one or two that look very much like they are "official", but in fact, none is more official than the other, as there is not an official change of name register.

In the UK, changing your name is remarkably straightforward. All you need to do is start using the new name. To make it official (and in order to obtain a new passport and other documents), you should daft and sign a Deed Poll, which must be witnessed.

A Deed Poll is simply a declaration that you are officially renouncing your current name, replacing it with the new one.

There is no need for a solicitor to get involved. There is no need to pay ANY of these money-making websites a penny.

You can draft the Deed Poll yourself, or use this free one: http://www.kingnicholas.com/namechanges/

I used the above and changed my name recently. I am now in possession of a new passport and driving licence, in my new name. To change your name with other institutions, such as banks, just send them a copy of your Deed Poll and request the change. It might be an idea to photocopy your new passport and send this along too, just for extra ID.
  • Well that's worth knowing! Thank you very much Jammin :D I thought there was some goverment dept a bit like the passport office...

I'm still sore over the way I was completely fleeced by the passport office last year, so I don't want to go down that road again if I can help it! Scrimped and saved so hard for a holiday to see my brother in Belgium, then had to spend the whole damn lot buying the passports. Still can't afford to use the things. Grr    (ha ha, and now we'll all have to get new ones! Sigh)

But why pay them (or any other site) to do something that you can do yourself for free?

Just on a side note - beware of sites that end .org.uk - this does not make them any more official than .com or .co.uk - anybody can register a .org.uk site..
  • I wouldn't change your name, I think Wiggly worm has a certain ring to it.
