I'm having back problems so since I'm not able to get to the library or charity shops (god forbid I should buy new :o) I've been dusting off the books still unread on my bookshelves.
Reading David Nicolls' "One Day" and really enjoying it. I usually read crime/adventure novels so this is somewhat of a departure from my usual choice. I know it was once a best seller so I expect a lot of you read this ages ago. Can't wait to finish it (and yet don't want it to end iyswim).
    Normal people worry me.

I am a fan of crime/mystery/horror books, but have been reading a post-apocalyptic series. The books are by R E McDermott, the first is Under a Tell-Tale Sky, the second part is Push Back - it isn't available yet but I got a preview as I am on his 'fan' mailing list.
This would usually not be the sort of thing I go for and, even though I knew I was getting the second part free, I was reluctant to buy the first one. So I got the kindle sample from Amazon. I liked it enough to buy the book.
The story starts with a solar storm which takes out all the electricity across North America (and they assume most of the rest of the world). It follows the government approach, a bunch of seamen and coast guards who work together, city gangs, and prison escapees. Although there are a couple of fairly far-fetched story lines, most of it seems pretty believable. And he has some likeable characters. I'd recommend it as an entertaining read, not as great literature, but it is thought-provoking too.

    Afternoon all

    Just finished reading

'I Let You Go' by Clare Mackintosh. Loved it, though bit strange in places. A psychological thriller with plenty of twists. 8/10
'The Bees' by Laline Paull. A beautifully written book about another world. Really enjoyed this. 8/10

Both of these now heading for chazzer as they came via my DS. As I haven't been able to get to library this week I've re-read one of my own books

'Under The Tuscan Sun' by Frances Mayes and just about to start the second one 'Bella Tuscany' both about buying and restoring a house in Tuscany, learning the language and life there in general. Enjoying them just as much the second time around.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend

    Hi

Just read lynnejk's post and couldn't read and run (even though I subscribe, read daily and very rarely post!)

'Under The Tuscan Sun' by Frances Mayes and just about to start the second one 'Bella Tuscany' both about buying and restoring a house in Tuscany, learning the language and life there in general. Enjoying them just as much the second time around.

I watched the film of this yesterday.... was on BBC the other night. Love, love, love it. Wasn't sure until the end that it was a book but now that I know it is, will keep an eye out for it on kindly.

Currently reading Lucy Dillon's 'the secret of happy ever after' ... a chic lit, which I like because I don't have to concentrate too hard. There's a divorcee, a dog, a book shop and I'm hopeful of a 'happy every after'. Nice light read and as I've read some of this author's books before, would highly recommend.
I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.

Think I need to join in with this! I literally have hundreds of books that need to be read! My main problem is that I keep buying more (and I work in a High Street bookshop too, which doesn't help. I keep bringing proofs home!) Luckily I'm a quick reader.

    Is anyone on Goodreads?

I have this but I've gone back to my slovenly ways and am mid way through several books now: 14 at the last count :o . Post a rating when you're done, please?

I was thinking the same! I don't think I have enough life left to read the books I have, let alone those I intend to add to the collection! I was in fact musing where I should bequeath my carefully hoarded collection :D

Took Kate Atkinson's Life after Life on holiday, found it hard work although I like her writing, maybe I had to think about it too much whilst trying to relax. Also read A God In Ruins, also by Kate Atkinson which I enjoyed more.

After my bad reading experience with Julian Fellows' Past Imperfect that I started (but disliked so much I didn't finish:o) for my first attendance at a book group I went to the group with some trepidation. The members were a friendly bunch but the book discussion wasn't what I was expecting;).

After a brief straw poll of who liked or disliked the book and a very cursory chat about the characters they went on to spend the rest of the hour talking about Downton Abbey which he also wrote. I rarely watch TV apart from news, current affairs and sport (too busy reading;)) and had never seen a single episode of DA or read the book (if there is one) so I had nothing to contribute:rotfl:

I was told that the small number of attendees wasn't typical because of holidays/illness this month and the person who had suggested Past Imperfect and would have led the discussions wasn't there either. I will probably give the group another go though. They are not meeting again until September.

From what you described it sounds like you would have better spent that hour reading something you did enjoy! Hope it improves after the summer, if not be brutal and find a group that is more like-minded.
