Evening fellow book-worms
Ooh - I didn't know that a film had been made. What was the name of the film please ?
Lx
The film was called the same as the book Under the Tuscan Sun ....Diane Lane and Sandra Oh starred in it.I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.0 -

For me, reading is such an obsession that I'd gladly quit work to sit around and indulge my hobby. I bought another 3 from the chaz today
It's over a year. And funnily enough, I broke my foot quite badly 10 weeks ago, so I have been just sitting around all day reading!0 -
Well I decided to buck my ideas up and actually read a book end to end, uninterrupted:
7/10: Interesting in the most part, dismal, hard-going and seemingly off-topic in others, it takes an unexpected turn at the end. Mostly it made me think hard about several concepts.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I picked up a paperback from the charity table at Tesco the other day. It was described as a 'brilliant psychological chiller' and looked unread. Win-win then:j
The book was The Little House by Philippa Gregory (the writer of historical novels that is much lauded on various reading threads). I hadn't realised that she wrote anything else:o. This was modern, contemporary to when it was written in the 1990s.
All I can say is I was very disappointed. It seemed pretty samey through a lot of the book as the 'suspense' was slowly racking up. The trouble was, although it was apparent that things would come to a head eventually the majority of the book was just a chronicle of the minutiae of how they coped with the baby's daily routine. Also, I had no fondness for the main characters. The only interesting ones were the peripheral ones who appeared very seldom.
Admittedly, there was the inevitable final twist, but there's no way it could be described as the 'whiplash denouement' that was promised (unless 'whiplash' meant 'quick'). The end came too quickly after the long, boring build-up.
I read it quickly so I can't really complain about too much time being wasted. I won't be reading another of her 'chillers' though. I also have some of her historical novels to start and am wondering whether they'll be worth the bother.0 -
I have started reading The Loney - can't remember who by as the book is elsewhere.
I'm enjoying it, but it's not a book you can pick up and put down every 5 minutes, so I think I need to wait until I've got a couple of hours to really get stuck in.
It's written from the perspective of a child, the brother of Hanny who appears to have a learning disability of some sort. The family trundle off with other church members to do a religious retreat in the middle of nowhere, with the hope of a cure. Lots of hints about things not being as that should be, atmospheric gothicky type writing. So far so good, just need to be undisturbed for a bit to finish it.
Costa book of the year last year. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

I've read another 2 in full this week:
9/10. Wow what an inspiring book, where do I start?! I'd wanted to read this for years, ever since I read the sequel "Gather together in my name". A true tale of resilience by an amazing person, God rest her soul.
6.5/10. A quick and easy read. I've never seen the film, but knew the first part of the story and of course the theme tune! I didn't like the main character at all, didn't get his angst or behaviour so lacked sympathy with his seemingly endless ability and resources that allowed him to wreck other people's lives. I found the basis on which people formed "relationships" in the book to be quite surreal!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I have just read the first chapter of this book (a chazzer find from this week) but am unsure whether to continue. 12 pages in and I already find it rather disturbing. Has anyone read it?Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I really enjoyed this. I won't lie - it is a disturbing book in terms of the context and subject, but if you like Ishiguro's style then it's definitely worth reading. The film's not bad either, I was surprised as I thought it was be quite difficult to translate it to the screen but I was quite impressed.0 -
I LOVED Never Let Me Go. I seem to remember it took me a couple of chapters to settle into it though.0
