Which banks give you your new a/c no. straight away?

I want to switch from my Santander 123 a/c both to get a bonus and to avoid this month's fee, due on the 18th. I've just realized this might not be possible if it takes the full seven working days but to increase my chances, which banks will give you an account number and sort code straight away when applying online? I'm presuming you need one as I've never come across an invitation to switch an existing account when applying for a new one. I'm particularly interested in applying for First Direct or Nationwide Flex Direct.

  • Most would usually od this I think (unless for some reason they ask you to take ID into a branch, like TSB did to me last week)

If you're opening a basic donor account with a bank you're already with they should give you the sort code/acc number straight away as they already have ID records for u

What does OD mean? I just have regular savers with Nationwide and nothing with FD.

    A typo of do.
Make sure you get family/friend to refer you for NationWide then you get £100 each. If you don't know anybody with a NW account then check out the referrals board, lots of people offering to give you £150 out of the £200 (£50 of their £100 referral bonus + your own £100).
Make sure you click Quidco & Topcashback links just before you apply...Quidco giving you £75 bonus, TCB £35 meaning you could make £210/260 in total

You can probably say you want to switch when applying for the NW account so you won't need the new acc/sort to begin with, just your 123 details. If it needs to be done after the application you should be able to phone up to get the details

You should wait until you have received your debit card as you need that for the switch application to go smoothly.

If you don't manage to switch before the 18th, life will still go on as all it costs you is £3 extra.

Downgrade your Santander account to a free one, then switch without rushing.

Barclays, Halifax, and Lloyds provide account details online if your application is successful.

Thanks Grumbler, never realized you could do that. Can it be done online? I already have an unused Everyday current account that I was saving for a future switch, so would they let me keep both?

RBS do too assuming you pass the online ID verification. Debit card then arrives a few days later.

    Should that not be:
    • Real life friend referral with them keeping their £100 (£100) + £75 Quidco = £175
    • Referral from MSE assuming the other person will give you half of theirs too (£150) + £75 Quidco = £225

Where did you get £210 / £260 from?
