Depends on what you mean by straightaway: In my own personal experience both Co-operative Bank and TSB gave me the sort code and account number online for both current account and savings account within an hour of account opening.

Make sure you click Quidco & Topcashback links just before you apply...Quidco giving you £75 bonus, TCB £35

Are you saying that you can get both Quidco and TCB cashback on a single application? Have you done this successfully?
  • Thanks Grumbler, never realized you could do that. Can it be done online? I already have an unused Everyday current account that I was saving for a future switch, so would they let me keep both?

Yes you can keep both but you'll have to phone them up to do it.

    A typo of do.
Make sure you get family/friend to refer you for NationWide then you get £100 each. If you don't know anybody with a NW account then check out the referrals board, lots of people offering to give you £150 out of the £200 (£50 of their £100 referral bonus + your own £100).
Make sure you click Quidco & Topcashback links just before you apply...Quidco giving you £75 bonus, TCB £35 meaning you could make £210/260 in total

You can probably say you want to switch when applying for the NW account so you won't need the new acc/sort to begin with, just your 123 details. If it needs to be done after the application you should be able to phone up to get the details

Note however that it might now not work to combine TCB/Quidco with NW RAF offer - see posts 279 onwards of thread below:

RAF & TCB worked for me but I did it last July...maybe they've locked it down now

    Cashback sites: £900 | £30k in 2016: £30,300 (101%)

Likewise for me in October, maybe it's their new year resolution to crack down....

Downgrade your Santander account to a free one, then switch without rushing.
I rang to downgrade but after explaining everything I was transferred to the account opening section who, after further security questions, only then told me there would need to be an application session lasting up to 20 minutes! I declined, saying I hadn't got the time.
Actually, my concern was that the convo might go something like this:

SANT: Ah Mr Sanders, I see you you already have an Everyday Current Account which has been unused for years; we'll just transfer your balance and payments into that, shall we?
ME: Umm, err, I was saving that account.
    SANT: What for, exactly?
ME: Umm, err, well I'm sentimentally attached to it because I once used it to buy cat food for my cancer-ridden pet Tiddles, who's just been run over. I want to preserve it unused as a sort of shrine....

You should wait until you have received your debit card as you need that for the switch application to go smoothly.

If you don't manage to switch before the 18th, life will still go on as all it costs you is £3 extra.
It will cost me £5 extra.

Can you not switch from a San 123 without the new debit card?

If there's a debit card assigned to the account you'll need to quote the number to initiate the switch.

If you tell the new bank there isn't a debit card on the account, and the old bank contradict this by saying there is, then the switch will fail.
  • I am also switching one of my Santander 123 accounts to First Direct. Applied online via the £150 switch link and was given account number and sort code and said switch could be done by 21 January at earliest. My fee goes through on 30th so that is fine. Just need to transfer the £20k out somewhere now.
