    Oh dear, this could get messy. If he did rip out the Velux, he would be leaving a hole in the roof. Council won't like that.

    He sounds like a domineering man. If your MIL suffered abuse from him (this doesn't have to be physical, it could be emotional or financial abuse) she could contact Women's Aid for advice.

    Thanks I'll let her know. Furniture etc in sure we can get hold of its the potentially having to try find flooring and replastering or redecorating that'll be hard if it goes further and stuff like holes in the roof could be a lot worse. He's rather unpredictable and that's the worry - we ideally just need him out so he can't do any more.

    Get her to talk to Women's Aid urgently and explain the threats. It may be possible to get either an injunction or an occupation order preventing him from returning and doing any further damage.

    She needs to go to court and get something cant remember of hand what it's called, but he could end the tenancy and nothing she could do about it.

    we fear he's going to be even more pathetic removing carpets, catflap from door etc

    Has MIL actually got a cat? Hope he doesn't do something to it

    By the way when it's a joint tenancy only one party needs to give notice for it to be actioned. I would indeed check that he hasn't done this.

    hi, my heart goes out to her, very scary, after reading all the posts I would think he could be arrested for criminal damage ( the house is council) and therefore a injunction against him not to return to the house, as said help him move the quicker the better, charity shops will help out with furniture etc, but one move at a time 1st, get him out, then start to rebuild your home,

    Yes he can hand in notice without her consent.

    If she contacts the police.. because this is abuse.. the law changed a couple of weeks ago regarding emotional abuse so it is a crime.. he can face up to 5 years in prison for that alone but she needs to call the police right now.. it is also possible if she is eligible to get legal aid to cover the costs of an injunction to keep his crazy a$$ away.

    She needs legal advice right now and police involvement right now and to keep in touch with the council.

    Go back to the house. Lock the door. If he tries to come back in call the police.
    While he is, as a tenant, entitled to be there, jhe is not ntitled to harass or intimidate your MIL and the police are likely to advise him to move on to avoid causing a breach of the peace.

    She may want to speak to a solicitor to obtain an injunction and to apply for a transfer of the tenancy into her sole name, as the council cannot take his nbame of unless either he gives his consent,r there is an order to tranfer it,.

    Shelter is a charity that gives expert housing advice. They will have info on how joint tenancies in social housing operate, info on rights and options, domestic abuse/relationship breakdowns.
