Not Buying It- A Consumer Holiday 2016

  • Ahoy shipmates,

Well, I'd say I'm on partial shore leave down here in the Smoke - as Shakespeare would have it, one foot in sea and one on shore :rotfl:

We did buy some stuff at the event, but nothing we hadn't discussed and planned for. One card game - we love these - and a few pieces of art for the home we plan to buy in a couple of months. All cheaper at event prices! So I'm feeling good about that on the whole :)

Hope everyone else is having a warm, dry, enjoyable weekend!
  • Took 2 bulging bags of stuff to the CS yesterday, now my drawers close easily and I plan on actively avoiding buying more things to put in them. :A

Had a cull of my Amaz0n wish list, which is down from 63 to 28 items (half of which are gift ideas for other people so I don’t forget when it comes round to birthdays/ Christmas).

The plan to go for a springtime walk got canned yesterday due to the torrential rain, but the walk into town with CS bags was good for a bit of fresh air, at least. Played a card game instead; one that we’d bought on travels and hadn’t yet played- I have to be in the right mood to learn new rules!

Family visiting next weekend. Last time, we walked the plank into the ocean of sainsbobs, spending £75 there, followed by another £25 at the butchers... which might have been easier to stomach if we hadn’t got to Wednesday and run out of things to have a meal from! Our monthly budget is £200, incl toiletries and cleaning stuff, so a major overspend. (You know you've gotten carried away when you have a pyramid of glass coke bottles in your fridge, when your carbonated drinks purchases normally amount to a bottle of coke at Christmas and a couple of bottles of lemonade in summer) Did a shop the Friday just gone, with a bit more of a considered approach, and totted up that the extra stuff I got added up to about £10.50 including £4 wine that had a third off. Will have to buy a loaf, milk, bananas and apples, plus probably a box of eggs later in the week, but other than that we have lots in cupboards that we can use.

Chirpycheap- Cheese is my luxury. I don’t think I’ve ever not had a block of cheddar in the fridge and every now and then, drop a piece of brie in the trolley to enjoy for supper on crackers. :o

Right, I'm off to start prepping my roast chicken dinner; I'm sure you can guess what the theme of tomorrow and Tuesday nights' evening meals will be too!

Still on board but have been busy with RL and GCs this week. I have bought tickets for concert in June - this has become a combined yearly event with friend and we choose different venues and include a city break. Krakow this year. Much rather spend money on this than carp.

  • My 'sin' is Roquefort and black grapes I just can't resist them together :)
also love brie as well My brother is coming home this week for a few days from France where he lives and I am hoping he brings some brie with him :)

DD has just visited and brought me a smashing Kipling bag that she bought when she was away on holiday in New York, it should have been $95 but she spotted it at $50 so snaffled it as they are apparently quite expensive. I am really pleased and its exactly what I wanted. She also brought me home some Smuckers grape jelly which I mix into plain yogurt and its delicious Bless her .Apparently her and her OH and my DGD and her friend spent just over $5k in New York !!! but she said it was meant as a shopping blowout !! Good job they can afford it .

There's me thinking about my spring break weeks holiday in April to Staffordshire that will cost me less than £168.00 plus food :):):) different strokes for different folks I guess.

    Have a good Sunday chums

Day 49/366 Another NSD. Lots of domestic trivia as I know I've got a full week coming up workwise. Spanish chicken in the SC and Mr GBT has made a coffee liqueur that he had the kit for at Christmas. He's got a different flavoured one to do but we haven't got enough vodka. Thankfully enough Tesco vouchers arrived last week to enable us to get some more without taking a chunk out of the grocery budget. Went out for a decent length walk and picked up lots of discarded tins that I've redirected into my recycling bin. Managed another section of a course that was paid for me ten years ago and am now getting on with it...have joined up with a few other friends who also have the course and haven't got on with it either. Knowing that we've got a monthly meet scheduled to discuss what we've learnt is quite a good motivator!

  • Evening everyone

Just a small post before I'm off to bed. Has been quite a busy weekend. Out yesterday evening for a Japanese meal with some friends to celebrate a friends birthday. She very kindly invited us and didn't wanted to hear our protest... While some went home after dinner three of us ended up in a bar and I paid the drinks, so that was my only spend of yesterday.
Today I had brunch with two friends - third one had forgotten about it and only replied after we had texted her a couple of times..., very annoyed about her unreliability as things like that happen quite often... - and we spent a lovely morning together catching up on loads of news while eating delish food.

Jackie, 5k on a holiday...? Ok, if they have the money and are happy to spend it like that, why not?
My sister and I are planning our camping holiday along the South coast this summer and I guestimate it will be quite an inexpensive but exciting holiday.

GrannyKate lovely idea to do a different city trip each year! That remindes me that I will have to have a chat with two friends about plans for bank holidays... We actually talked about a city trip at Eastern but I guess half of Europe will be on its way then, so better not...

eandjsmum, congratulations on the new job!

happytravelling well done on not overspending. I'm sure you will still have plenty of nice food when family comes round!

Have a nice rest of Sunday everyone!

    Morning guys

Well I've had a weekend contemplating my future plans and I've decided I really want to have a proper go at accumulating sufficient funds to retire at the age of 55 ..... 13 years time

The 1st thing to do is pay off the mortgage as it's the only debt I have. So starting this month I'm going to transfer any left over money at the end of the pay month straight to the mortgage. I will off course still be adding £100 to my emergency fund and £100 to my annual bills account each month.

I get paid on Wednesday and have nothing to buy before then so this morning I made my 1st overpayment to the mortgage :T

    More reasons for NBI :j

    Morning all :D
Small spending over the weekend my airer gave up the ghost  So replaced it with an extra wide one (go me) which cost £34.99  But had a voucher for £30 so spent £4.99 so was happy with that.

Then a trip into the £ type places where I stocked up with odds and ends that were needed so ended up spending about £12 so not too bad I suppose ;)

JackieO Yes a big spend for your daughter and family but you cant go to NY and Not Buy It :D can you. Thats why I have not been there for about 6 years :rotfl:

So I am on board the ship still and thinking carefully about any spending :D

Well if you have to buy a lot of stamps stock up now, especially for Christmas and birthday cards.
The price of a first-class stamp will increase by 1p to 64p and second-class by 1p to 55p from March 29th. Large letter stamps will also rise by 1p. It seems a small increase but for the number of Christmas cards we still send, that will amount to a decent saving !.
