  • Hi LL. My cholesterol is too high as well. GP gave me a diet sheet. Basically not much red meat, cakes, chips or cheese. Eat more fruit and veg and have oil fish at least once a week. Avoid fried foods and creamy sauces and dressings. Eat more pulses, such as beans lentils and peas. Eat wholemeal bread, pasta and rice. That's about the gist of it but I thought I ate quite healthily anyway but will harder. Do hope all scans turn out ok x

Hope all is well with the scans LL and it's good that you're getting to grips with the cholesterol right away; I don't have any qualified advice to offer I'm afraid, as there are so many conflicting ideas on how to eat right for health - maybe the mediteranean way of eating might be worth looking into?
Hugs and well wishes to all who are poorly and/or feeling low; I have to confess I'm feeling a bit below par myself today and have been "out of sync" these past few days - feeling a bit like I'm coming down with something, although maybe I need to remember to take the vitamins that I've spent a small fortune on, to boost my well being, instead of forgetting every morning!
Joking aside - I could do with improving my concentration/memory; I'm finding it hard to focus on one thing at a time lately and it's getting frustrating.
Anyway, back to fabbing - I'm not quite keeping up to scratch this week but I'll be back on it soon, and I'm wearing perfume!:)

LL, I've had high cholesterol results and have reduced the "bad" levels by eating less pastry, less cheese & red meat and having more oaty-based food and bio-yogurts. I used to have oat crunch cereal & yogurt with red fruits for brekkie, home cooked food for dinner & my usual bread or cracker lunch. The level dropped steadily over a 12m period, and my gp was happy not to put me on statins at 43. Luckily my blood pressure is on the low side, so that reduced my heart attack risk.

I developed IBS following a severe bout of food poisoning which at its most severe meant I couldn't eat animal fat in any form (including chippy chips) and any amount would necessitate a prompt "visit". Luckily this has subsided but now I hardly eat pastry, cream or drink milk, only bio yogs and a bit of cheese, which has kept my lipid levels down.

    Hi everyone,

I've been MIA for a few days and have caught up with the thread. Ill health has been the reason I've been missing (rather apt considering the last posts!!!!) - DD had a fever Thursday/Friday and then it was DS on Saturday/Sunday, plus OH has had a chest infection for about a week now. I'm knackered after having to look after everyone!!!!

For those with I'll health, you are all in my thoughts. Ditto those with anniversaries of loved ones.

Needless to say, fabbing hasn't been on my mind, but I have a good basic routine, so I can let things slide without it setting me back.

I'm off work this week as DS had a late half term. I'm going to try and make more effort with hair and make up this week. So far, I've managed to fit in a wax and I've treated my good leather handbag, ready to use this week.
  • LL - does sound like a rollercoaster of a day but glad you are feeling positive at the end of it.

I'm wearing clothes and not pyjamas despite really really wanting to! Wearing leggings and a dress and a jumper. I've also let my hair down after being tied up for work. I'm going to pamper my brain with some reading!

Chanie you must be worn out! Hope the family are all on the mend.
Hedgesparrow a good read in the evening is lovely:) I'm off to the library tomorrow to find something to get lost in.
Home alone with the pooch tonight nervously watching my Gunners take on the mighty Barcelona - OH and the boys are there - it's making for a very nerve wracking evening!
I'm off to bed when the game finishes - hoping for a bit more energy and mojo tomorrow.

Pretty much what I expected. Border line diabetic and sky high cholesterol.

It's up to me to turn these round so here goes.

Time to get a grip. I will work out a plan of attack. I'm not taking this lying down.
Tonight I will start my cholesterol research, any tips and advice will be graciously accepted.:D

Didn't want to read and run. Sending you a big hug LL.:A

My DH has been having some unexplained aches and pains recently so his GP asked for similar tests. All, thankfully, have come back clear and his cholesterol level is down to 4 which GP is very pleased about.

I put it down to him making and effort to lose a bit of weight by eating almost exactly as vnms describes. I know you'll probably have to make some tweaks for Paleo and he still has treats but it does seem to work. Similarly, many posters who were borderline diabetic on the SW thread report good results.
  • Good morning lovely ladies

Thank you for all your advice and tips. I also spent some time reading it last night - whilst half watching TV - some good television last night.

I am really enjoying the "Back to the Weekend" series. And I love "Gogglebox".

Anyway it seems we are all "singing from the same hymn sheet" re what is best to eat. Maman I agree that shedding some weight will help too, so that's my primary objective. Doubt that I'll ever get my cholesterol down to 4 though, well done to your DH. Hope his aches and pains settle down soon.

From what I've read and understand fasting seems to be the best way to tackle things, the 5:2 fast seems well recommended to get fast results.

I have just ordered a couple of books by Dr Michael Moseley so I'll see how I go.

Speaking of good viewing. I also watched "The Martian" and can thoroughly recommend it. You dont have to be a Sci Fi geek to enjoy it because basically it's about survival, a bit like "the Revenant" which I've not seen yet. Anyway I thought it was a cracking film.

Today I'm going to do a bit of kondoing. It's a lovely day so another nice walk is also on the agenda.
  • I started watching 'Back to the Weekend' the 50's episode last night - I found it quite fascinating. It brought to mind how surprised my grandmother was when we visited her back in the mid '90's. I was deep in conversation with her, holding fussing baby DD on my lap. OH 'oh she probably needs changing, give her to me, can I use the spare room? wheres the baby bag?'. I thought nothing of it but my granny's face was a picture 'he changes nappies?!'

OH and I had our cholesterol checked a few years ago when we moved back to UK from Ireland and registered with the GP. OH came out of examination room with a smug look on his face, apparently his was the lowest the nurse had ever recorded. Mine was low enough I was told I had nothing to worry about, though unlike hubby I am at least 10 kg overweight, so I am not sure how that works. My teen daughters went vegan a few years ago, though hubby and I are not, we did cut down on animal products just because we cook main family dinners catered to them, so maybe that helps.

I can thoroughly recommend the 5:2 LL. Definitely read the books, helps you understand the science behind it. I lost 10 kg slowly over 4 mos. I put a bit back on over christmas/ my dad visiting/ granny funeral etc., but I am scrambling back on the wagon now. Main tips I would give are stay hydrated on fast days to avoid headaches, base any food you eat on a fast day around protein or good fat (it is more calorie dense but will stop the horrid blood sugar drops and make you feel satisfied) Avoid anything carb laden or sweet on fast days, even if it is within your calorie count - the sugar rush will annihilate your will power, I react very strongly to carbs so on fast days I even have to be careful with fruit! I carry a small container of almonds/walnuts/brazils with me and snack on those if I feel a bit wobbly. You soon get used to fitting the fast days in around work/ social life, and it means on your eating days you can live a little. No diet is for everyone, but it is definitely worth a try and apart from the weight loss there are supposed to be loads of other health benefits.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

Kale is an acquired taste.......:rotfl: I can manage small doses but could probably exist quite happily without it.;)
I think I'd draw the line at a Kale smoothie, but I like it as a seasoning in soup (think instead of parsley). And I've been using it for decades ... since longe before it was "in" :p. However, it much easier to find and cheaper now :D.

Following previous advice, I went to the perfume shop for a sniff-test and I currently quite like Armani Acqua Di Gioia. However, I worry that it's too old for me, or too young for me (:rotfl:) and I'd love to find a cheaper version. Ho hum, first world problems eh?
