the other thing I've found works on W10, is to uninstall and re-install the sound drivers, had to do it 3-4 times already on my W10 machine, usually after windows updates..... stoopid MS......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

As windows 10 updates have caused me other issues I'd like to give this a try!

Download the Windows 10 (64bit) audio package here...

...and install the complete software package, not just the driver.
From your description it sounds like you have the default Microsoft driver installed and, as with many branded laptops over recent years, it doesn't contain the necessary software to properly detect a device being plugged into the front HD headphone socket.
I did this but got "ShellExecuteEx failed: code 3221225477"0 -

right-click on Computer, then select Properties. This brings up the computer info page. Link on the upper-left of that screen Device Manager, click it. This will bring up the device manager window. Right-click on Sound, and then left-click on Uninstall. Confirm if required. Then Restart the machine. The drivers will be reinstalled when the machine reboots.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

My screens don't look quite like you describe. I can't uninstall Sound. However I can uninstall "Connexant Audio HD speakers". Is that what you mean?0 -
