Half term Week - DD's bedroom

I have absolutely no idea how I'm going break DD's room down into categories. There is stuff everywhere! She will be helping and we need to get it done so that her baby sister can move into her room as the traffic keeps waking her up in our room at the front of the house. DD wants her sister in with her so hopefully this will be motivation enough for her!

Haven't been to the charity shop since the beginning of the week. The lady there will be worrying about me!

WIth my youngest's I've broken it down sort of like this:
    1. clothes / shoes/ backpacks
    2. books
    3. cuddlies
    4. jigsaws
    5. board games and boxed games
    6. paperwork (ie: drawings and paintings)
    7. colouring books and pens
    8. Lego
    9. then toys - broken down (here) into:
      - themed toys (a box of ItNG, a box of Octonauts etc)
      - cars/ vehicles
      - Angry birds (massive amount)
      - other identifiable things (eg: Gormiti)
      - box of random toys (such as McD's toys, party bag fillers etc)
      - remaining items (pictures, money boxes, and anything else)

We totally sorted out each 'category' and then did the joyful bit with each item in that category (except Lego - as apparently all Lego is joyful!)

I can't say much has gone (and we're still doing a couple of categories to finish it off as it's being redecorated) but some progress has been made and he has had a say in it all :)

  • Thanks greent, that's really helpful! It's no.9 that's filling me with dread. Kid's toys are so random and she's particularly attached to cheap tat, like magazine free "gifts" and these are precisely the things that are going to be the biggest risk to the baby. At the moment they are all shoved into a plastic drawer in a big mess. I think I may go against MK's advice and do a stealth clear out of the things I don't think she'll miss.

Unfortunately my chances of keeping the volume of tat down are very slim thanks to her grandparents that come armed with bags of the stuff each time they visit! I did suggest that at Xmas we give them a speech about how much stuff she has and how it doesn't get appreciated so we would rather keep gifts to birthday and xmas but DH doesn't want to offend them.

DS3 loves stuff like that, too - hence why very little has gone :( I'd love to swipe a load of it but promised myself when I started this that the kids would have a full say in their own things, however hard it is! :D

  • I'm pleased to say that apart from Lego I have never heard of most of the toys on that list! :rotfl: (I don't have children).

I looked up tempur pillows, gosh they are expensive- going to have to go on the list for when I'm feeling flush. However Mavvymoo's comment got me thinking - what have you bought that made you wince at the price but has been really worth the investment? For me, it's the Turtle mats I have in the kitchen. A lot of money for a doormat but they can be washed and come up like new.

  • We purchased some natural latex pillows a number of years ago. They were expensive but years later they're still as new, have never lost their shape and provide excellent support. I personally don't like the memory foam pillows that mould around you as these make me very hot whilst sleeping.

KM progress is still moving forward but slowly due to RL getting in the way. Mine and the kids footwear has been done and I have a pile for the shoe recycling bin/others that are like new to pass to a friend to see if she likes any. The kids clothes are also almost finishes - DD's tops and wardrobe are planned for this weekend. I do dread the thought of the non clothes categories with the kids as they both love books and seem to want to keep every toy/random object. However, at least another 4 bags of stuff taken to the Charity shop :)
  • Morning All...
My update from yesterday..one bag to vs fill of clothes and shoes.
We are getting there in this household.

We have tempura pillows and a good memery foam mattress. Am v small and with lower back n shoulder pain..it has helped enormously as is doing the osteopath exercises that I have been given.

One question - what are turtle mats?

    All have a good day.

    House clean and revision today....

    A DEAD BIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I swear I am not making this up!!!!!!!!!

Just went into the other half of the parental loft (which wasn't tidied/ kondo'd in Sept) and was crawling gingerly across the central roof truss towards to gable end when just about put my hand/ knee on a skeletonised dead bird!

EWW! It looked like something out of Alien. I have retreated temporarily from the loft with some things to sort out downstairs, sneezing and coughing, demanding a cuppa to steady my nerves.

Folks, those of you who have lofts, don't be strangers to them, you have no idea what is going on up there!:rotfl:

Turtle mats are door mats - cost about £50 from JL or Lakel-nd. They last for years and you can hose them scrub them and they come up like new.
back to pillows OH has a tempur pillow but I didn't like them made me too warm so I have feather and down pillows.
I had a trianglular pillow years ago and DIL2 pinched it when she was expecting. I sat with it at my back and the arms around me at the sides to lean on .

GreyQueen you are so right as my loft has a leak and I only discovered it on one of my few trips to the loft to find more stuff to tidy. The slater was supposed to be 2 days ago but he didn't arrive.

Mummified rats in our attic GQ............

Pillows: an alternative especially for those with allergies are pillows from here Not tried myself but BIL and SIL swear by them and the duvets - BIL suffered with morning headaches and congested nose every morning for years and was given medication for asthma............they changed their bedding and hey presto......he never was asthmatic after all:mad: I have been tempted by the duvets but not until the one we have is past its natural;)

I read somewhere about how much dust - ( skin cells and mite poo basically!) collects in our pillows -- frightening! If I can find the article I will post it. I am sure we are supposed to change pillows frequently - maybe that was just from a pillow manufacturer point of view ;) Certainly wash often I would say
