KonMari 2016 - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

GQ some Tesco stores have recycling containers for hangers.
Thanks, Floss. There's a big Tosspots on the edge of the hometown, I'll see if they do recycling there. Are they usually inside the store or out with the recycling banks? I've never actually see coat-hanger recycling bins.:o:p
We've had a minor melodrama just the now. The can of coloured emulsion was a 5 litre jobbie purchased in 2005 and hasn't been opened since room was painted that August. It's a metal can, which is pretty unusual these days. Anyway, I prised up the lid and the inner edge was pretty rusty but the emulsion was fine once stirred and I was happily painting away when I noticed that there was a hole in the side, well below the level in the can (was still half full) and it was seeping pretty fast.
Grabbed a bowl from the kitchen to stand it in, finished the painting project ( strip above window about 1 ft x 5ft) and Dad has decanted the small amount of white from its can and has now got the yellow in there - we didn't want to waste about 2.5 litres of paint, even if it ends up ever-so-slightly paler due to being adulterated with a bit of the white.
 Folks, the can which split when I opened it had spent the past couple of months sitting on a carpetted floor. Can you imagine the horrible mess ensuing if it had spilt down there?! Just goes to show that you should be careful of stored stuff as it can die on you and cause a ghastly mess.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Or in the attic... wouldn't do loft insulation much good and could soak into the ceiling.
And remember... paint doesn't last for ever, so it's best to try not to buy more than you need. If I have a little left over I decant into jam jars and label - but most importantly I keep a note of what the paint was called (or the code if I've had it mixed). Even if you keep some of the same batch it can a. go off or b. not match for touching up as the original colour may have faded over time.
If you can't find recycling for all the hangers GQ, I always found they went well on freegle as there are plenty of people NOT kondoing who need them for their ever-expanding wardrobes, or use them for car boots. It's also always worth asking your CS whether they need any.0 -
RL intrudes again.............left a couple of bags at CS during the week but havent really done much else. The Big House Project part 2 got underway this weekend which meant emptying kitchen cupboards again. I really thought I had been ruthless in the last 2 rounds but cant believe the amount of stuff still.........now have large box in conservatory marked - Not Going Back and have told OH he must not take anything out of it! I will either fr**cycle or CS it. I have some large pans which I can no longer use - was going to give away but I happened to see how much this particular brand going for on Eb*y so I think I will sell
. 2 crates of stuff from under the sink - I am going to get it down to one. I keep 'noticing ' clothes that I really dont want anymore so next weekend I think I will have another clothes sort. The week ahead is a busy one with The Inspectors in so I will focus on the delight of a KM session at the weekend - little things!!
Coat hangers: I now leave them 'at the point of sale'Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Actually, I could try the hangers on freegle, re-use is always to be preferred above recycling. I don't get hangers from the shop as I only buy undies new and the rest of my wardrobe is either chazzer-sourced or someone else's cast-offs.
I'll sling them in the car and take them back with me on Weds.
We've also had a breakthrough with Justin's spare radio/ tape player. Talked Mum through it; she needed another stereo for the kitchen a few months ago but ignored Justin's because it didn't have a CD player and bought new. If she ever needs another, she'd do the same because Justin's isn't suddenly going to turn into a CD player.
Just before lunch I fished out its powercord from the tin of misc powercords and fired 'er up and it actually works, so will need a bit of damp-dusting to get the fluff off and will then freegle it. Someone, somewhere, possibly wants a twin cassette deck/ radio. It's good news for the cupboard because the darned thing is nearly 2 ft long.
Also discussed with Mum the ideal usage of the cupboard, as in an imagining of what she'd want it for if starting with a clean slate. It has a clothes rail and shelves along one side wall and another shelf above head height. We're getting towards a vision of the Ideal Cupboard and I am going to spend the remainder of today and a bit of tomorrow achieving that.
We've also not rowed about it once......... :rotfl:
Will browse a bit of internet whilst letting lunch settle and cleaning the stereo, then will put the 2nd coat of white emulsion on that wall.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

DS and I took a load of old tins of paint to the recycling last Friday. Because the local centre doesn't take oil paints we had to travel some distance to the one that does. Imagine my disbelief when we were told to put in in the landfill skip  We have one of those just up the road! He wasn't kidding either, there was evidence of huge oil paint spills on the insides of the skip. In fact, volume-wise, most of the stuff we took ended up in the same skip.

GQ - Lucky escape with the paint. Someone may well want the radio/tape player, I had an elderly gentleman in the CS last week looking for a new player as his tape deck had died, we had a nice looking S*ny rad/cd/tape, he did not want to haul it home unless knew for sure that it worked. We do have them PAT tested, but had no cassettes, so suggested that he popped back with one of his to try:D
Bathroom tidy this morning, but nothing to Kondo, bedroom later, but not enough time to do another sweep on clothes or start costume jewelry. None of my rings fit me now joints are so pesky, intending to take everything into nice helpful local jeweler and see if some can be sold to fund one or two others being made larger. I have dropped some subtle hints about a new wedding ring, but OH showed no interest, so I guess he cannot complain if I flog existing one. (it is a very thin one, we were so skint and I was not fussed about value etc so just chose a cheap one that fitted under my engagement ring - no regrets either).:DThe best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. My late mum used to say things come in threes. This morning I switched on the kettle and the on off switch didn't work. Switched on the dishwasher and the motor went - had a looksee inside and the pump has gone too. Then after a cup of tea made in the microwave I started to iron and it went too. Pre KM I would have wasted hours looking for the paperwork but found everything I needed including the box for the kettle with 5 minutes. 2 items still under guarantee but my dishwasher is ancient. Think I will wait a month or so to see if I can survive without it. Might even buy a new basin and dish rack. :rotfl:0

GQ in our Ts the coat hanger recycling bin is instore just behind the tills on the way out ours also have an ink cartridge recycling bin near it. The sign on it says they will use the hangers in their warehouse where possible and recycle the broken or unusable ones. I often take mine there.
Done loads this bank hol weekend
Made a new garden bed out of some scaffold planks that were from late fils painting stuff, I was happy to find a use for them as they have paint brush marks and splatters on that show his use. Old computer desk from shed, part reused as shelving on a rack in Dh garage most going into wood skip at Dh work. Huge heavy roll cabinet taken outside for use as storage there instead of in a spare room. Our room arranged so that nice but in spare room as no space for it bedside cabinet now fits where it should. Drawer ful of junk sorted through and carrier bag full binned. Happy accident discovered that drawers from a small IKEA box of wooden drawers fill perfectly into top drawer of now I place bedside cabinet with make still in them so inside ofhaving stuff put away in wardrobe it's now where I'm likely to use it.
Been home base and bought loads of compost so new bed can now be planted up. One roll of turf bought so bed in wrong place has been dug out and turfed over, making the garden seem bigger S it opens up the lawn area, it was only a small bed. New bad is in A separating gravelled side bit from lawn area. Gravelled bit is now covered in pots and tubs ready for veg plants or already have seeds in.
Solar fairy lights are now back up at bottom of garden, waiting for tonight to what they look like there.
Pleased with progress made not much got rid of but things are better in their new homes.
Enjoy the long weekend all.SPC~12 ot 124

Caravan being collected on Thursday so I've made sure the bathroom, fridge/freezer, oven and sink are all pristine! DH will bring it home on Thursday morning & I'll give it a hoover. The couple buying it are younger than us with younger grandchildren so should get lots of use from it. I'll be sorry to see it go but glad someone else will be having the enjoyment now. We collected the large TV on the way home from DS1 - I've just spent the last hour getting it all tuned in to the cable box, DVD player and surround sound as DH is a total technophobe! I can now look forward to umpteen car/bike programmes ona 50inch TV I stead of a 37inch. Big sigh!!! No wonder he complains I'm always on the internet lol!
Think I may sell our old TV - ID like it gone asap though. Weather grey and chilly and hoped to get out in the garden but maybe tomorrow
Maddiemay - I had my grandfather's old signet ring, my mother's wedding ring and my worn thin wedding ring all remade into a new wedding ring for me. Maybe it's something you might do - especially if there is a strong sentimental attachment.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
Lots of bank holiday progree it seems! Well done everyone!
I decided to kondo black hangers - half my clothes are black and I just can't see what's what. See what happens when you lot set me off on a subject?!will take them to the chazzer next time I go.
Lots of cleaning and tidying today, as low energy has prevented this lately. Although in terms of "tidy" the house is very organised and I'm also ahead of the game in terms of washing, shopping, packing for next weekend's trip.Jan 20 - NST challenge
