KonMari 2016 - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Okay this is harder than I first thought, I'm having a hard time with my undies draw.. I keep thinking of reasons (excuses) of why I should keep said item... I'm taking a breather and going to be ruthless, I think I may have to cut them up...
I found that just taking everything out, then putting away the things I really like wearing or are useful made me then realise what needed to go. And then making a list of what has gone out is really therapeutic - I post it on the 2016 declutter thread, and feel a whole, lot better afterwards.
Good luck!Declutter our home in 2024
Lose weight in 20240 -
Trip to recycle center : broken storage boxes, broken garden gorilla tubs, old plastic header tanks, wall mounted fan heater from bathroom that cant even remember ever using in 25 years, defunct light bulbs various, large amount of cardboard packaging from when wood pellet boiler was delivered a year ago, metal/wire basket pull out thing from kitchen cupboard that was the bane of my life for 20 years, ice cream tub of dead household batteries ( council use to collect with our kerbside collection but dont anymore
) I just put batteries in the tub until its full then deposit in a recycle receptacle and some laser jet printer cartridges from work - no longer allowed to put out with our with general waste so I volunteered to take them to recycle center - there use to be a skip for printer cartridges........no longer..... now all goes in general household waste skip:o. Our non recyclable waste wheelie is collected every 3 weeks and is due this week so have been trying to fill it with an assortment of utter rubbish from OH workshop shed.....once I had sorted it into stuff that should be recycled it looks like another trip to recycle center:mad:
I have started sorting the 'craft' cupboard in the DR - DDs where always very arty crafty but now I would like to use it for something else - namely crockery glassware etc however DD2 is horrified ( still a bit arty !) that I want to get rid....so whilst she has been out today I have gone through it - and on the grounds of 'this XYZ is a little bit childish now, have thrown/recycled some stuff, offered some on fr**cycle, put some bits out for CS and designated some to take to work to use up there......all the decent pens, crayons, pastels, paint, paper and what-have-you have I stored away neatly:D. Have created one empty shelf where I can store some crockery that is joyful but not in daily use. Next I will tackle the glassware/crockery and a tea service given to me by my grandmother which I will never use, that is in the upper part of the cupboard...........
Been busy but it doesnt really show yet:(Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Thanks you, for this. My draw is now done and looks very organised. Although I did transfer some stuff to my gym draw but am going to tackle that tomorrow.
I did have to cut up the old undies as I've sorted the draw before and just took them back out the bag the same night, so I cut them up.. to be honest instead of saying does this item spark joy, I had to ask myself whether I'd be embarrassed to die in them...0 -

Mum remarked that this weekend hasn't been much of a break for me, because of wrangling Stuff. I dismissed that, because it's a break from my usual routine, I get three square meals a day and haven't had to cook a thing nor have I washed a dish, so it's a break of sorts.Shame the weather has been a bit carp, would have liked to go walking in the woods with my Dad, but too dangerous in all the wind and it was raining heavily all morning.
Ne'mind. Let this be a deep lesson to us all - if you buy stuff and hoard stuff, you will eventually have to declutter stuff when you could be doing other things.
- Plastic storage crates on the floor, they're easy to move - but they can only be stored on the shelving I've been clearing from the bookcase I'm getting rid of.
- Clothes - still quite a few in there, but some of them can go into my own wardrobe. None of the anoraks etc can go by the front door, because there's another bit of damage there, a tile gone, and that could well let water in on my coat rack
- on top of the built in wardrobe - uh oh. None of this has been moved since I first put it up there when I moved in, erm, 6.5 years ago  Some of it is cushions for a lovely sofa I'm going to sell on facebook. Some of it I *know* needs to go to the charity shop ...
What if I hadn't been doing all this decluttering? How stressful would it be to try to find ways to store the things that need to be saved from a potential roof leak until a builder can get round here and do the roof? There's an awful lot to be said for kondo-ing.
2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Hope rain doesn't come thru your roof before it can be mended, karmacat.
But yes, when a crisis strikes, the fewer items you have to move the better. I recall a newspaper photo taken inside the hall of one of those poor people whose homes were flooded a few months ago. It was a largish hall with lots of little shelves and lots of little knick-knacks and pictures, there were many dozens of separate decorative items visible, each which would have been in peril and each which would have to be moved.
Some discussions over the tea table this aft have brought another few items into the picture for decluttering (my Dad often marvels how I can motivate Mum by example) and will be rehomed to the chazzer. Several items inc big things go chazzerwards at this end tomorrow, plus the dump run. I'll be busy at work but may do a chazzer run of my own after work, if I feel up to it.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Hello all
karmacat I hope you get no rain fingers crossed for you to get it sorted out quickly.
GQ Sounds like you have had a productive time at your parents.Glad you have found the curtains twin :rotfl:
The event went well this morning despite the pouring rain and high winds.
We were on the bric a brac and the really funny thing was it was nearly all stuff that had been kondoed from here :rotfl:That we had stuck in the storage shed everytime we had a box full so I had forgotten about loads of stuff but did I want it back:o No not one thing
But I did come home with 2 things one a brand new HO2 X5 steam cleaner the same as the one I had and loved but had snapped the handle on my old one and I was guttedSo was thrilled to see this one with everything in the bag :Tdonated £20 for it and put it in the car so quick if you had blinked you would have missed me
And a stunning posh chocolate easter egg which is so joyful and is the nicest egg I have ever seenWhich is now sitting on the worktop with me just admiring it
Trouble is its not mineSomeone won it as star prize in the raffle and is going to collect 'her egg' on Saturday
But what egg she is going to collect we will have to wait and see
;);)

I have been reading Spark Joy and last night got to the section about money. I have some vouchers from Survey companies that are being badly stored and shoved into my handbag occasionally in an inadequate and worn out cardboard folder. I started my day by concentrating on updating my financial records and shredding the paper statements. I fully intended to sort out my purse and vouchers but got distracted by an untidy kitchen cupboard. I had some silicone baking ware in a box in the top of the cupboard with my wine making things and it just wasn't at home. I took the box down and moved the contents to the cupboard with the other silicone things. I then used the box to store my unopened packs of coffee pads. This however got me thinking so I went online to check the dimensions of Wilkos tubs which match the smaller set I already have. They will fit perfectly, yay. While online, I decided to look at Argos Undersink Bathroom cupboards. My unjoyful, discoloured and inadequate current cupboard just isn't enoough. Ten minutes later, I had it ordered on Same Day delivery. It is now fully assembled, installed and filled with lovely joyful items including my Liz Earle C&P and a bunch of Kondo folded Liz Earle muslin face cloths. It looks so much better, I am really pleased. I think if I hadn't dicovered Kondo I would still be dithering and thinking 'Oh the old one will do'!
While waiting for the delivery, I did a bit more shed Kondoing. The weather here has been quitee nice this afternoon. I have sorted out the pile to go to the tip and rescued a juicer which was relegated there when I ran out of kitchen space. After a cleanup, it is now happy in its new home recently vacated by the silicone bakeware box.
Since the picture situation has turned out to be a little more complex than I thought. I will give more time to considering picture frames but i am not going to hurry. One little win though. I took and old picture out of the cheap frame it was in and took away the tatty surround. On its own it actually look much better so I am going to pin it to the inside of my office cupboard door.
After todays exertions, I am shattered so I am going to Kondo some wine and chocs tonight and crash out.0 -
Nice one, mavvy.
Have just wrangled Stuff in three bags onto the suitcase trolley and secured it with a spaghetti of bungee cords. I don't bring much stuff when I come to visit unless its stuff I've borrowed like books and am returning.
My luggage for these trips is completely random. Imagine this;
A lost property claim form when GQ tries to itemise the lost luggage; an M & S towelling bathrobe, several pairs of knicks, socks and a dress, pair slippers, two thrillers (one paperback, one hardcover), several items of clothing which don't fit her (donations) and a couple which do (cast-offs), a washbag, a lot of old envelopes for scratch paper.......
Reminds me of the time 30-odd years ago when I collected my prints from one of those one-hour places and stopped on a nearby bench to check them out before walking home.
Good job I did so or some doting parent would have missed some cute pix of their toddler. Went back into the shop and pointed out their error. They asked if I was sure they weren't mine?
I grinned and pointed out that my pix were closeups of spitfire engines and once-molten rocks............ funnily enough, they turned up without too much bovver once they started looking for them.:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

For example I need new plates [lost some and others chipped] , storage for tea etc but my design is extinct so is this the time for a revamp. I like things looking nice so know this move will lift my spirits but finding the right ones is a task in itself!
Happy Bank Holiday KDing all!
