What shape is the room. Is there an obvious choice for a "feature" wall.
It's essentially a large rectangle, with a small 'pillar' coming in on one long wall for about 6 inches - we removed the walls for the utility room and integrated it to make a more usable large space. The internal door to the hallway is at once corner on a short wall. FRom there is a run of drawers, a range and then cupboards to the corner. Some wall cupboards along here and the extractor with a large stainless steel splashback - although this is likely to be replaced by purple glass. The long run then has unbroken line of units (including doors hiding the Wm and DW) The two windows are along this length, with a small section of wall cupboards in the middle (shaped at either end to taper) Units then stop at the corner. Then on the other short run there is a tall panel radiator , maybe 18" wide. Then the external door (white, half glazed, clear glass and almost west facing, so is sunny later on in day into that part of kitchen (door therefore has an integral blind otherwise anyone at the table can't see) The other long run has a floor to almost ceiling set of cupboards (2 x 700 wide) set up as a dresser and then a sainless stell American style f/f. Then the small 'pillar' (not really a pillar, as it's not freestanding) Then on the final bit of wall is another radiator (but a long normal height one)
Cupboards are maple with stainless steel handles. Worktop is black granite. Floor currently very dark brown/ black large porcelain tiles but we hate it and is being changed for K@rndean, so will be wood effect. Tiles are being changed to plain creamy coloured ones (they run from above the upstand to windowsill level along the L shaped long run and short run of cupboards)
Ceiling is white and split along the middle as a joist had to be put in when utility room taken out, so there is a 'beam'. 6 spotlights either side of beam. Skirting boards are maple. Solid (ie unglazed) door to hallway currently white but may be replaced with wood.
No obvious feature wall. No artwork/ pinboards on walls, just a plain wooden clock on 'pillar' bit. (and 8 million magnets are school letters on fridge freezer!)
We used to have plain terracotta walls elsewhere in the house. Currently have the deep plum colour from dulux in our bedroom as an accent. Old kitchen had light terracotta walls. Colour doesn't phase me in that respect - it can always be repainted! The kitchen is the heart of the home here.

Wow, greent, lovely colour appliances. Envy, envy. And your kitchen is about half the size of my entire flat (even more envy, envy).
Yup, we're gonna need to know what colour your cabinets and worktop are, and what kind/ colour you window coverings. I'd be tempted to match that eye-popping purple to a big bit of blank-ish feature wall, if that wouldn't be an unhappy combination with the cabinetry. And perhaps paint the rest a soft dove grey, which is easy on the eye and yet sits happily with purple (assuming it wouldn't fight with the cabinetry.
Snuck in an hour's allotmenteering after work, following my Dad's mantra; just because you can't do it all, it doesn't mean you can't do something.
He was speaking in the context of gardening, but it's applicable to most things in this life, in my experience. I was also stir-crazy after having spent the best part of a gorgeous but chilly spring day indoors and wanting to get out there.
ETA; cross-posted with greent. I reckon purple/ gove gray could fly. Dove grey is less glare-y in sunny rooms than white.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Thank you for the colour advice everyone! I'm rubbish with anything artistic and am terrible at co-ordinating colours lol!“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. I agree - purple on one wall, maybe one of the short walls ?? and then grey on the other walls. Would tie in nicely with the stainless steel appliances and the purple glass splash back would be the showstopper.
Every room needs a showstopper..........:rotfl: doesnt have to be expensive - even an eye catching cheap poster can be enough.
(Just my opinion.......;)
Yes I'm done for now. Have booked a Physio appt on Wednesday for my poor aching back.0 -
I've got quite strong opinions about colour (was in art school for 6 years and can see any colour and mix it from primary colours, had to learn this as a design student).
With decor, there aren't any right or wrong answers. There is what appeals to you, as it's you whose going to be living with it.

Oooh I'm not so sure about that. We painted my office and the adjoining sun room in a minty green. I tried to like it, really I did, but it looked like the colour you'd see in a public convenience and I can't imagine it looking good anywhere. Took 5 coats of a warm cream to cover it up. We left one large wall as green but did it a sage colour and did all the woodwork the same. I can still see a little of the minty green showing under the cream in a couple of places near edges, must Kondo that at some point!Make £2025 in 2025

As a family, we're rather fond of the colour green so, when I was a student and living away from home, I wasn't overly surprised to hear that my parents had elected to paint their bedroom green.
What kind of green, I asked (they'd had it mixed) and Dad told me 'pond scum green' by which he meant that bright emerald stuff. It was this colour.
It was one of those colours which, once they started painting, was clearly a bad idea but, you've started so you finish. And there it was, vividly vilely emerald, for about 20 years. They were always meaning to repaint it, but the room is very cluttered, there were always things to do for the extended family and time passed, as time is wont to do.Then they went on holiday at short notice and I, in cahoots with kid bruv who lives with them, sneakily booked some time off work and went to theirs with two pots of apple white. Took a coat of white emulsion to dim the emerald enough to cover, and then two coats of apple white. Then I put all the furniture and Stuff back where I found it and left it as a surprise.
They were thrilled. GQ; covert ops housepainter, at yer service, missus.

Oh i love the purple of that kettle! Purple and grey sounds lovely - I think I would go for a less intense purple for the walls if you want the purple to be fairly deep. Ah, I can demonstrate in person but am useless with describing colour things!
The way I try to get round getting things coordinating is by having the colour scheme as 'shades of X' - many different blues in my bedroom but that means none of the stronger blues seem abrasive to the eye.
GQ, that green must have been vile!
Electronics are mocking me today. Cat fountain stopped working, got a new one and the old starts working, ofc! Keeping the new one and passing the old onto friends after a thorough scrubbing.
My phone may be gubbed - its not accepting charge properly. There's a few things I can try but if it doesn't improve, then I will need a new one. Its 2 years old and just out of contract, but I was hoping to nurse the handset for a bit longer than this!
Oh yes, the hot water was running brown all day. The plumbers are coming to flush the system tomorrow - I'm so glad I rent rather than own as I do not have the money spare for house repairs. Means my flatmate will need to shift a few things about in his room but its not too much to move thankfully:AStarting again on my own this time!! - Defective flylady! :A0
