KonMari 2016 - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

When we moved in here in 1989 we hadn't much money so we did it up as and when. When we got to the back sittin room/diner we ordered new carpet and set about decorating. When we pulled up the old carpet and underlay we were met with the sight of marley tiled. Think Alliance & Leicester - turquoise blue and orange! Hideous and so covered in dirt it took two days to get them clean. They were so firmly stuck that they wouldn't shift. It was a good job we hadn't set our heart on sanding down the wood floors.
I have to confess to getting rid of a battered leather suite about 4 years ago to accommodate my deceased stepmothers suite, dralon covered, beige, with reversable seat cushions, and fringe round the bottom. So comfortable, I'll hang on to it some time I think.
I'm gradually whittling down my books, the ones I kept first time round. I decided to read them again, and if I decided not to keep them I'd send to CS. Thing is some of them don't even make the reread stage, some I loved before are just going straight into the box.
OH still fighting me on Kondoing. In the last couple of days I've seen him using an old supermarket basket, and I've found a window blind hidden behind a door. It seems for everything I put out, he brings a dozen in. Another long talk required me thinks!0 -
Hi Silva, thanks very much for the info on making lamps. I am sure I could do it but will wait til after Easter, too many other commitments before then.
I have very fond memories of setting up in a little flat in the 80's, we bought all furniture from auctions (real ones, not fleabay!). Parker Knoll chairs for £12 each, kitchen table n chairs, £15, a rug for £3. The table was a fab pale blue formica and would be bang on trend as retro today
we only got rid of our auction-find giant wardrobe a couple of years ago, it was too big to get down stairs in one piece and even broken down into 3 pieces we got stuck with one of us jammed in the minute hallway, unable to budge at all. For pure unadulterated, side-splitting laughter it
was worth the £5 we'd paid 25 years earlier!
Busy kondo-ing workload in the office. Tidying up lose ends, and sorting out my knowledge hand-over... only 3 weeks to go! I will admit that I had clung onto quite a bit of paper despite it being a paperless office (are there really any of these?). So all the old training notes, guidance, legislation etc, is now in the recycling and it was very cathartic:rotfl:

GQ My White Marley tiles also had the Marble effect with the Brown and Grey splodges on :rotfl:and the trying to scrub marks off which where part of the very poor marbling process
I am also remembering a like nest of wicker and rope Drum shaped tables which stacked inside each other when not in useThe tops were made of pulled tight string so if you put a cup on it it would tip over. Or fall though the string :rotfl:So being the dedicated follower of 80s fashion.I just had them for show next to the peacock chair

I almost wish I had seen some of these interesting decor items, all I got to be scarred by was 50s and 70s attempts at upper middle class.... My grandparents made fashionable choices which in no way suited the home - brown lozenges on the wall with a dark dark red carpet, with the skylight blocked over and just a single fluorescent light!
In my flat I can see tiny bits of blue paint in the tiny, windowless kitchen. It would have been pretty dark and cramped looking. In the bathroom, the lining paper (wood chip effect, yay) is starting to retract at the edges, showing a very very bright pink paint. Yet the pinkish tiles have flecks of blue paint, I can only imagine how candy coloured it must have looked originallyPersonally I've adapted to cream rental walls and strong colour in the furniture, let's me bring it with me - bright orange really brightens up a small bathroom
Brought a few items in, specifically corsets and a slow cooker. And a timer switch for the slow cooker. As the kitchen is so tiny, I may keep it in the living room under a display case that has all the chargers and things under it already - seems a bit mad so will sleep on it and decide:AStarting again on my own this time!! - Defective flylady! :A0 -
Who remembers the lobster pot pouffeMortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0

Mavvy, someone I used to work with used to work as an office wallah for Marley tiles. I don't think they exist as a company any more, either defunct or taken over by another outfit, can't remember which.
But their work lives on after them, in the form of millions and millions of streaky floortiles...................:rotfl:
Later today I will unwrap the brand new pillow I bought yesterday and junk the two pathetic ones, thus halving the pillowdom in one stroke. Looking forward to it.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Morning all
Ches I never had one but remember exactly what you mean, we had a cane stool thing with our bamboo suite and a glass topped coffee table - Dh had to put a wooden top over it when the children came along as we caugh dd1 trying to climb on it. I believe the table is still in the attic.
We have mils red Formica topped kitchen table up there it comes down at Christmas as an Extension to the dining table.
Had to laugh round mums the other week she had the drop leaf dining table from our childhood in her hall passageway, she said she was a bit annoyed as sister had borrowed it 19 years ago to use as a paste table when decorating and had kept it in her garage now she decided to have a clear out shed brought it back to mum, mum said if she'd managed without it for that long it was safe to assume she didn't want it and it would have been more helpful to mention it but offer to CS it instead of dumping it back on her.
Busy all day so no kondoing here, but we wTched a DVD last night that will go in the CS bag and I did a bit more knitting so small amount of stash reduction.
Have a joyful day all.SPC~12 ot 124
In a world that has decided that it's going to lose its mind, be more kind my friend, try to Be More Kind0 -
When I married in the 1980s we couldn't afford much and were given lots of things. I've always preferred older furniture anyway, and most of it is still with me (although not the husband!).
His parents gave us a coffee table which had been made by a friend- I reckon it must have been one of their wedding presents in the 1950s. Picture beautiful oval spindle legs, and a plywood top which curved gently upwards at one end (must have been a beggar to make). The other end had a hole in it to hold a plant pot.
When people asked about it I used to say it was a conversation piece. Well, we were having a conversation about it so it must have been! :rotfl:Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0 -
Been lurking and chuckling away at the posts about house decoration and ornaments. I worked overseas a lot during the nineties and brought back classics rather than what was trending. However, every time I came over to visit I had to bring back wooden giraffes as I could pick them up for pounds from source and they were well over £100 here!
On the KD side of things, it is very slow moving again here as back at school and I am always tired the first couple of days, I think the driving to work after a week off seems to make my eyes tired. The rest of my body seems fine. Checking the diary I think we have a relatively free weekend so will hopefully get moving. I have noticed this week a great reduction in the things lying around/not put away. It is nice and something I could get used to!Don’t put it down - put it away!
